Pirates Option Wilfredo Boscan to Indianapolis

The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned pitcher Wilfredo Boscan to Indianapolis. No move has been made to fill his roster spot yet, but the Pirates are expected to call up a position player to take his place. Boscan was added to the 40-man roster and called up on Saturday in case the Pirates needed an arm out of the bullpen after all seven relievers worked in Friday’s game, with three of them going multiple innings. It was Boscan’s first time in the Majors, though he didn’t get into either Saturday or Sunday’s game.

Without making a 40-man roster move, the most likely position player to be called up is Tony Sanchez. The current 40-man roster has three injured players, Jaff Decker, Andrew Lambo and Justin Sellers. Willy Garcia, Elias Diaz and Alen Hanson all have no big league experience, and that leaves Steve Lombardozzi, who can’t be recalled until May 26th(10 day waiting period). Hanson has been hitting very well lately, though it is unlikely the Pirates call him up for a short-term appearance.

  • What about Tabata? Possible?

Sure, he would require a 40 man roster move though and didn’t want to speculate on who could be dropped to add someone

      • Ahh , I had forgotten he was no longer on 40 man roster.

      • Could Sellers just be transferred to the 60 day DL. He was on a rehab assignment but hasn’t played since April 26th (so he must be hurt again) and at this point it’s been 54 days since he was placed on the DL (March 27th). Or does the rehab assignment mess this up?

I don’t see any rules against it, but I’m not 100% sure. I honestly can’t remember a player being hurt during his rehab and then getting moved to the 60-day DL. I’m going to say he can be just as a guess. Good question.

  • Does Boscan to straight to Indy and start the next game to stay on schedule?

  • John: Too bad for Lombardozzi, because I did not think he got much of an opportunity with only 4 AB’s well spread out. Sanchez hit well while he was with the Pirates.

He could be back eventually and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him, they just don’t have that option without placing someone on the disabled list. I think a 40-man move is possible unless the Pirates really want to go with three catchers or Hanson. Since Hanson’s a prospect and doing well, I don’t see them bringing him up just to sit on the bench for a few days and get him out of his rhythm. Sanchez seems most likely with the current 40-man set up, followed by roster move, followed by Hanson at 20:1 odds
