Notes: Sever has pitched well all season, though he has some trouble going deep in games due to his pitch count. His 5.1 innings last Monday was his longest outing of the season. Last year he put up great stats for Bristol, which helped earn him a starting job this season, and he has continued to look good in that role. Sever has 39 strikeouts in 37 innings, with a .232 BAA and a 2.43 ERA. He isn’t a ground ball pitcher(0.67 GO/AO ratio), which is rare in the Pirates’ system, but he also isn’t a soft-tossing lefty, which is also rare in the system. Sever sits low-90’s with his fastball and he’s working on his secondary stuff, which he will need to improve to be successful at the higher levels. With the addition of Stephen Tarpley to the West Virginia rotation, Sever will go to the bullpen where he will be a long man.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
