David Todd Podcast: Trades, Guerra, Glasnow, Taillon, and More

I had my weekly segment with David Todd on 970 ESPN yesterday, discussing a lot of the latest news with the site, and the news in the Pirates’ minor league system. A few of the highlights, with the podcast found below.

**We discussed whether the Pirates should add a big bat, and then got into a discussion of going for it all this year versus continuing the path of building through the farm system. I think they could trade the right players now and add a big player, but they should keep certain guys who could play a long-term role.

**Deolis Guerra got his first win last night. I talked about what was working for him this year, referencing Ryan Palencer’s article earlier this month about how his off-speed stuff was the key to his success this year.

**I discussed the recent injuries to Tyler Glasnow and Jameson Taillon, and how their injuries could impact the short- and long-term. In Taillon’s case, I think there’s a chance this recent setback with his lower ab strain could hurt his chances of making the majors this year. With all of this, I think Adrian Sampson becomes the guy who could be the best prospect to come up this year.

**We also discussed John Holdzkom (before his DL assignment), Luis Heredia, and Gift Ngoepe.

One of the strangest stats of the year….

Oakland A’s are a plus 48 in runs for the season – which is second best in the AL and in the top 5 in MLB – yet are 36-45!!!

    • Take a look at A’s record in extras and 1-run games and you’ll see why.

Yes, they have been very resilient….just when you think you can write them off, they really start clicking. 4-0 win last night. If Beane doesn’t sell out in July, this team could still contend for the division title.

Won’t they likely get Jerrod Parker back soon from TJS? I think they may have a second starter who is also out to TJS, due to return soon?

Delmon Young is awful in the outfield – and I assume he cannot play first base, or he would have been doing that in Baltimore.

But, the guy has always hit. he used to be a head-case – maybe he’s grown up?

He’d be a huge bat upgrade over Hart, Hernandez, and /or Lombardozzi. I wonder if he every played first base? Can he be worse than Pedro or Hart?

Please, enough of Bastardo….he is just terrible. He could have cost the Pirates a game today against Detroit and let the Tigers back in the game. We need a second left hander in the bullpen who can actually get people out on a consistent basis. I don’t think Richard has the kind of stuff to fit that role, do we have any other internal options?

Although Worley has his moments and is a useful guy to have around, I think we could stand an upgrade from the RH side in th bullpen as well. You never know what you’re going to get with Caminero, Worley is okay, Scahill is hurt – only Melancon and Hughes have been pretty consistently good all year.

IMO, here are the Pirates needs down the stretch:
    (1) LH reliever
    (2) RH hitting first baseman
    (3) RH hitting right fielder
    (4) RH reliever

  • Watching that 14 inning win was a stomach churner. Can’t say enough about the work Bastardo and Guerra put in, or for that matter Clint for sticking with both for multiple innings.

Camineiro now has highest HR/BF ratio of anyone on current roster of 1 HR per 9 IP (Liz and Sadler were worse in their limited time). Hard to trust him in a close game at this point until he gets some movement/deception on that heater.

  • Don’t have time to catch the podcast now…is Delmon Young mentioned?

Highly intrigued now that he’s on the block…career .798 OPS against lefties.

  • I am not a fan of Simpson and had no expectation of JT making it to Pgh even before the ab injury. Two wasted years….sigh. Picking #2 (Pedro and JT) hasn’t been kind to us. It’s been a tease so far.

  • It looks like Guerra may be the next Pirate reclamation project.

<-************** Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6000 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $177 per hour.
