The Pittsburgh Pirates needed a pitcher today in Milwaukee. Vance Worley made the start yesterday after Francisco Liriano was scratched with a neck injury. After Worley was bounced early, the Pirates needed multiple innings from Deolis Guerra and Antonio Bastardo. The result is that their bullpen is depleted. They solved that issue by calling up Wilfredo Boscan, and placing Gorkys Hernandez on the disabled list. Dan Zangrilli was the first to report the news, and the Pirates just confirmed it with a press release.

Hernandez goes to the DL with left shoulder discomfort, retroactive July 13th. That move allowed Boscan to return to the majors within ten days of being optioned to Triple-A, after being sent down last Monday. This is the third time that Boscan has been called to the majors this year as bullpen depth, although he has yet to make his MLB debut.

    • I think he was in charge of replenishing the bubble gum box. The cards plug I n a AS A player and he goes 5-9 with two homers. We get a guy who can’t who can’t run the bases after 15 years playing of baseball

    • I was talking to an esteemed local media guy last night. I asked what crime Tabata had committed. He said, “Someone made a bad read on Gorkys leading to Bucs calling him up. A very bad read. A guy who’s made very bad reads before.”

Read into that what you will. I got nothing else.

      • I consider myself well read, others might disagree, but I really have no idea what that statement means.

      • Gorky has to clear waivers before being sent down. Since they thought he might have some value come September (speed/defense) or maybe even as 4th OF in the future, they needed to make sure he would stick before adding him to the 25-man roster. Someone must have thought he was ready, and then Hurdle must have quickly seen that he was not. Now we risk losing a (minor) September call up…hence the injury

  1. glasnow, bell, and hansen if they are not brought up, the pirates will fade and miss the playoffs. ps maybe huntington and hurdle have taken them as far as they can.

    • They should of DL’d Pedro or better yet released him. He is pathetic. He is a platoon 1B who can’t field. When he plays if the Bucs have a lead they take him out for defense. He can’t hit. Every full moon or so he gets a big hit like against the Cards but that’s about it. I would rather see them platoon Ishakawa and Rodriquez. Forget about Alvarez’s so called potential to hit a HR. The other guys could put up numbers as good or better than what he does plus play a little in the field.

      • Neither one of those players is reasonably likely to produce an OPS of .700 or better. We need offense right now more than we need a defense only first base tandom with our entire offense in the other side of the infield basically backups. not a winning combination unless you expect our pitchers to throw up shutouts consistency with this better defensive alignment
