Pirates Looking For Fourth Outfielder as Deadline Nears

Jon Morosi reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates are looking for a fourth outfielder, as the trading deadline(4pm) is less than two hours away. No names as of now or possible clubs mentioned. One thing to remember around 4pm is that some deals may not be announced right away, so there could be something announced sometime between 4-4:30 as well. We will keep you updated in this post if anything comes up.

    Bring back Travis Snider

  • Honestly I just want some Napoli’s this deadline. Bullpen is taken care of, and I don’t want to spend a top 30 prospect on an average bat we don’t need the second Jayhay gets back.

    • Napoli blasted one out last night. I wonder what the asking price was on him and whether and how soon the Bosox will test the waiver wire trade option with him. Same thing should happen with Travis Snyder.

Bold prediction: Three team deal between the Pirates, Rangers, and Padres. The Pirates get Moreland and Ross. They give up stuff.

    • That would be joyful and triumphant.

It would make a lot of sense, I think. The Rangers want young pitching for Moreland, and we could make some of that in the upper minors expendable with an acquisition of Ross. If the Rangers like the pitcher we send them enough, they might also help prospect-wise sending stuff to the Padres, plus whatever we send them for Ross.

I don’t think we could pull off either deal without the other, though. This is the only way I could see keeping the cost down on both, both of whom we’d have next year, too.

Of course, what with the Padres deciding they’re “still in contention,” any possibility of this fell through.

  • GI Jones was just designated by the Yankees, he’s having a down year, but might be a good bounce-back candidate for cheap.

Where is Rob Mackhoviak when we need him?

  • “Baker has been in the Majors for parts of 11 seasons and is a lifetime .296/.350/.509 hitter versus left-handed pitching.” Sounds like a NH waiver claim if I’ve ever seen one.

And I think it would be a good one. He’s not that different from the RH options on the trade market, and we wouldn’t have to give anything up to get him.

    • Baker is 34 and his game fell off a cliff this year. An 84 wRC, against mostly LHP, no thanx.

But a 99 wRC+ against lefties specifically, with a 10% BB rate and a .226 ISO. He’s not as good as he once was, but there are signs he’s still a viable hitter against lefties.

Also, he has a career BABIP of .327, and this year sits at .273, which, in 80 PA could just be bad luck.

        • OK. Still not buying it though, 99 isn’t good, it’s just less bad.

It’s average. And even 84 is better that what we can get out of Rodriguez and Ishikawa. He’s a free upgrade, why not take him?

  • Spend another $1.85 million and hit $100 million payroll? That’s parade-worthy isn’t it?

Jeff Baker was released. This season, he’s not terribly dissimilar from Napoli, but he’d be free. Probably a better option than Ishikawa at least, I’d have to guess.

I want a 1B, preference is Freeman from the Braves.

    • Goldy. That’s who I want. It’d fun to see the Bucs get real creative and swing a trade for Votto and bat him second in front of Cutch.

  • This kills me. Our prospects that are so highly thought of are not even able to fill a 4th OF spot. I am really lost on this one. Why do we even pretend to these players that we value ther ability. I’m sorry. I see this as a very sad testament to our minor league players.

    • I think you’re jumping to conclusions there. Give NH time. I appreciate that he overvalues prospects and wants the Bucs to be continually good. The Bucs have the 3rd best record in baseball and have a farm system better than the 2 teams ahead of them. The Blue Jays have just gutted their farm system to potentially be more than mediocre and suck bad within the next 2 to 3 years.

    • Having a good minor league system doesn’t mean you’ve got a future major leaguer at every position, at every level. No team’s farm system is that rich, and the Rule 5 draft guarantees it never will be. At it happens, the system is a bit thin on upper level OF (the cavalry is coming, don’t worry). That’s no indictment of the system. It just happens to be one of the softer spots.

    • Is Willy Garcia just getting to AAA? He’s the only Indy OF on the prospect list, right?

    • I am sure the rest of the League is all choked up that our top outfield prospects are in A+ and two years out after graduating Marte in 13 and Polanco in 14…

      • Fair statement. But those were guided major league regular players with high ceilings and long term plans. I’m saying a 4th OF’er to help us and also help the prospect. How do you convey confidence that your day is coming hang in there, when this is the answer? I know the stakes are high, but time to bring one in and show that you believe in what he can do. It’s this way in every walk of life…next man up…not sit down shut up.

  • Perhaps Chris Heisey who was DFA by the Dodgers

  • Napoli. They still need a SP to put in behind Cole and Liriano unless that’s gonna be Glasnow’s gig sooner rather than later.

Orioles got Parra for the relatively low price of Zach Davies….Pirates could have gotten him…I don’t think Davies is any better than Sampson.

  • This may also suggest that there’s some concern with Polanco’s knee. And we know that with the way Marte plays the game, he’s prone to injury.

  • The Decker/Hernandez/Tabata combination isn’t ideal…but it’s not the most glaring issue on the team. Those guys are really only pinch hitters/runners unless one of the big three get hurt.

  • Ideally that 4th OF will also start taking reps at 1B.

  • I think a right-handed hitting1B should be a higher priority…or at least still worth discussing.

    • They can do both based on their bench. They have Stewart and eventually Mercer and Harrison coming back. That leaves 2 spots.

  • I’m not sure that’s the best move. Seems like a RH 1B should be a bigger priority since Harrison can fill role of 4th OF when he returns.

  • why give up a prospect for a fourth OF that will be here for 60 games and then be gone? Byrd is old and the only thing he is doing is hitting a few HR’s. If we can get him for Broxton, then do the deal.

  • Marlon Byrd please. Could just switch dugouts

    • I love this visual. Cutch waiving him over. Byrd filling out paperwork as he walks over the mound. That being said he’s probably expensive and Polanco is hitting. But if the price is right you could give Marte and Cutch much needed days off and would be great off the bench.

    • Yes pleae, send Votto and or Chatman also
