Wilfredo Boscan Recalled, Lombardozzi Optioned to AAA

After going 14 innings last night, with both Deolis Guerra and Vance Worley seeing multiple innings, the Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed pitcher Wilfredo Boscan from Indianapolis and optioned INF/OF Steve Lombardozzi to Indianapolis to make room for him.

Boscan was up with the Pirates earlier in the year, but never got into a game. With the All-Star break beginning tomorrow, he might only be up for one day this time. It was his scheduled day to start today, so he could help the Pirates if they are in need of multiple innings.

Clint Hurdle was asked about Boscan coming up before the game today.

“”It’s his scheduled day to start,” Hurdle said. “He can throw 100 pitches if need be. We want somebody with the most volume of pitches available, and he’s got plenty to bring. We don’t want be caught one pitcher short tonight based on last night. We have two pitchers that are down. Guerra is down; Worley is down.”

The Pirates will also have Jeff Locke available out of the bullpen tonight if necessary.

  • I was thinking the same thing. What move or moves will the pirates make after the all-star break now that we know that Hart will not be involved? Here is a possibly scary thought for tonight. I would guess is Pedro is our “emergency” 3rd baseman for tonight. Does that continue after the break? Will we see Hanson after the break? Not much else on the 40 man in the infield. Hanson is no help at 3rd. Some folks (such as me) have to be saying, “how did we let Romero get away?”

  • Wonder who will replace Lombardozzi after the break? Florimon? Nunez? Sellers? Hart and have only S Rod for 2B SS 3B?

  • Expected they would have to call up another arm after last nights game, let’s hope they don’t need him.

    • We desperately need Liriano to give us 7 innings tonight.

      • Its not really a totally desperate situation. Melancon can likely go, Bastardo only saw 1 batter and didnt throw the night before. Hughes only saw one batter and didnt go the night before.

We should have Melancon-Caminero-Hughes-Bastardo ready if needed. We really just have to avoid Liriano blowing up before the 5th or the game going deep into extras.

  • I think this is a good move. Lambardozzi didn’t do anything to keep his spot and with everyone but Walk and Blass pitching last night I like it. I am real curious what’s going to happen when Scahill and Hart return. Neither deserve a spot.

  • …oh boy?!
