Bristol first baseman Carlos Munoz has been named the Appalachian League Player of the Year. He is currently hitting .330/.428/.608 through 52 games. The league still has another week left on the schedule, but the season award was announced on Monday.

Munoz ranks third in the league in batting, tied for third in on base percentage, first in slugging and first in OPS. He is in a three-way tie for first in total bases(118), second with 11 homers, second with 21 doubles, fifth with 30 walks and he has driven in 38 runs, sixth most in the league. In 194 at-bats, he has only struck out 20 times.

While he has really tailed off in August, Munoz had a 1.194 OPS in July, which earned him the Appalachian League Player of the Month award. He also won the Player of the Week award at the end of July.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
