The Cleveland Indians have claimed right-handed pitcher Deolis Guerra off waivers, according to Jordan Bastian.

Guerra was a good depth option for the Pirates, but wasn’t consistent enough to stick around for the long-term, especially with the recent additions of Joe Blanton and Joakim Soria. He’s a guy who mostly relies on his off-speed stuff for success, which really led to him emerging as a MLB option, as Ryan Palencer wrote about earlier this year. It would have been nice if the Pirates would have been able to keep him, as that would have allowed them to bring him up in September when rosters expanded. However, they will have other options from Triple-A, including Blake Wood, who has been fantastic as the closer for Indianapolis.

On a related note, no word yet on whether Vance Worley has cleared waivers, or what his future will be. The Pirates had ten days to make a decision on him.

  1. It’s always nice to have one guy in the pen that gives you a different look, but the need to get a 4th competent arm at the back end (Soria) was just too great to keep Guerra around. And if it turns out that Caminero is on the path back to dominance, it does set the Pirates up well to shorten games during the stretch and into the playoffs.

I do wonder if any thought is being given to skipping Happ’s next turn, with the 2 off days coming up and Liriano’s abbreviated 2 inning start Monday. I would certainly consider it.

    • Not me. I want Liriano rested come September, and that short abbreviated start is a perfect weapon to do so with right now. If Happ can’t figure it out in the next 2 starts under the pest pitching coaches in the game, well, then it’s time for Liz IMO.
