Sometimes there are things in life that can’t possibly be as good as you remember them. That burger you ate one time at that place when you were really hungry. Marshmallow Alpha-Bits cereal. The Dinosaucers cartoon, minus the theme song. In each case, you romanticized how good the thing was for whatever reason, and when it came back into your life, it was obvious that you spent years over-hyping it.

Then there are times when you finally find something that you’ve been missing for a long time, and it’s not only as good as you remembered, it’s better.

That’s what we have here today. I’ve spent about a third of my life searching for the 19 second video you’ll see below. It came around at a time when YouTube wasn’t popular, but right at the start of that time period, which left hope that it would one day surface. I spent hours of my life each month searching, figuring if I went deep enough in YouTube, I’d eventually find it. I wouldn’t recommend this method, by the way. You see shit. You see shit that you can’t un-see.

But I could never find it. Until now. The quality isn’t the best, but that’s to be expected from a commercial around the 2005 era that has been sitting on an old DVR for a long period of time. But it’s good enough, and it will save me days worth of time searching each year, and will probably do the same for Pat Lackey and many other Pirates fans.

Without further ado, I give you…

  • I didn’t even know I was missing that! Tim, if you can find the one where Jason Kendall covers a lady with dust while she’s trying to beat her rug on a clothes line, then says “you’ve got to stay on top of it.” or something to that effect, then my life would be complete.

  • Where did you find it? I’ve been looking forever for this!!

  • The timing of you posting this is hilarious! A good friend and I were just talking about this being our favorite Pirate commercial of all time. Neither of us have seen it since that season. It’s as awesome as I remembered it.

  • i remember during spring training the year after ollie exploded onto the scene, Peter Gammons called him his “dark horse to win the cy young.” already an avid collector, i hoarded as many of his rookie cards as i could find…convinced of his impending stardom as well as the buccos immediate return to relevance. then the 2007 season actually happened, somehow not quite the way i had imagined.

ps. peanut butter boppers were dope.

  • I was disappointed the Pirates stopped wearing the uniforms that Perez has on. In 45 years of being a Pirate fan, they are still my favorite. On another note, Am I the only one who thought that was Jack Wilson when I first looked at the picture?

  • I miss the old espn hockey commercials when they first got the nhl. Kevin Stevens with his head on the ice listening…then he looks up and says “Buffalo!” …or maybe he was just down there doing a line.

There were some hilarious commercials with one player cutting someone’s break cables, mike richter eating a pizza in a fat suit saying “nothing’s gettin past me tonight.” And Barry melrose calling the expansion mighty ducks the pelicans. “P-E………PELICANS!!!!!!”

    • That just made me remember the old Bud Ice “Beware the penguin” commercials. “Dooby dooby doo…”

  • I remember the commercial, though I guess it predated my fandom. I became a sudden, diehard fan back in 2006 watching the team built around amazing players like Jeromy Burnitz and Joe Randa… It may be a miracle that I could become a fan in times like those.

  • Definitely remember this. I would also like to add the short lived snack “peanut butter boppers” to this list. Being 7 years older than my brother I purposely ate the whole box of his favorite snack and then they were discontinued. He has never fully gotten over it…yet I feel no guilt.

  • I remember that commercial. Very, very good.

  • I have been to the Great Wall of China, I have seen the Pyramids of Egypt, I’ve even witnessed a grown man satisfy a camel. But never in all my years as a reader of Pirates Prospects have I seen a post this amazing. Thank you for bringing this video back into our lives.

  • OOPPPS, I BORN’D THEM AGIN! Lovin’ it. Absolutely remember it. If Ollie had today’s coaching staff he could have been a monster. Then again he’s still younger than Grilli when he came here so perhaps he might be in camp next spring.

  • That’s amazing.
