Pirates Promote Stephen Alemais to West Virginia

The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted shortstop Stephen Alemais from Morgantown to West Virginia. The move comes as a corresponding move to Power shortstop Alfredo Reyes going on the disabled list.

I got a chance to see Alemais two weeks ago in Morgantown, and his defense was fantastic. The offense was lagging behind the defense, although he’s picked up the hitting lately, with a .421/.436/.553 line in 39 plate appearances in his last nine games.

The defense was smooth enough that Alemais looks like he could play in Bradenton, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes there next year. For now, he’ll get a chance to wrap up his season in West Virginia, with the hope that he figures something out with his hitting. I wrote about what he needs to work on, and what has been holding him back in my article last week.

  • cant hit any worse than Reyes did

  • This kid is gonna be a steal, I can just feel it.

  • A good reward for his excellent defense now lets see if the bat plays at this level.

    • WV only has 16 games left, so we won’t be able to tell enough about the bat in such a small sample size. One big game could skew the numbers

      • All I know is that almost from the day Tim did the write-up on him the kid has been hitting the cover off the ball. Coincidence? I think not!
It seems the system has more than a few ss who can pick it, now let’s hope that a couple develop the offensive side of their game, in addition to Newman of course.

My first reaction to the headline was “Nice! I hope the bat plays” From the reports since being drafted his glove is top notch.

  • Tim’s scouting trip pays off for the readers….

    Quick question…

Will the change in playing surface take an adjustment time?
