Prospect Watch: Big Starts For Garcia, Williams, and Eppler

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors and loses his prospect eligibility, he will be removed. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 30 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the 2016 mid-season update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

The Indians got what they needed from Trevor Williams, with the starter giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks in 6.1 innings. Williams gave up a one-out single in the top of the seventh, then was pulled with 99 pitches for Josh Smith, who gave up three unearned runs on a two-out homer, after a two-out error by Jason Rogers at third base extended the frame.

This big inning took Indianapolis from being up 4-1 to going down 5-4, which was the final score of the game. Williams gave them another solid outing, going 6+ innings with one earned run or less for the seventh time in his last ten starts.

Jose Osuna continued his hot hitting in Triple-A, going 2-for-4 with a walk. Gift Ngoepe also had two hits and a walk, hitting his 20th double of the season. Jacob Stallings also added a double, for the only other extra base hit of the game. A.J. Schugel came on and pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up only one hit.

Altoona got off to a great start, taking an 8-1 lead after the first two innings, and coasting from there to an 11-5 win. Erich Weiss had a huge day on offense, hitting a two-run homer in the first, then adding a double and a triple, while being responsible for seven RBIs, which would have been enough for the win.

Weiss has been having a solid season this year, with a .279/.350/.420 line after today, and a lot of extra base hits. The home run today was only his sixth of the year, but he has 21 doubles and nine triples, after adding one each today as well.

Jin-De Jhang, Barrett Barnes, and Chris Diaz all had two hit games, while Tomas Morales came on as a pinch hitter and hit his first homer of the year for Altoona, and the only other extra base hit of the game.

Tyler Eppler took advantage of the run support, cruising with just one run allowed through five innings. He gave up three runs in the sixth, but finished the inning and added one more, with four runs total in seven innings. Eppler threw 100 pitches, with 66 strikes, walking just one and striking out two.

The Marauders had a big 7-1 win over Port Charlotte, thanks to a five run inning in the seventh. Taylor Gushue got things started with a walk, then moved to third on a double by Michael Suchy. A one-out double by Cole Tucker brought both runners in, and Tucker scored the third run of the inning on a Kevin Kramer single, giving the Marauders a three run lead.

They added two more on a triple by Connor Joe, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and a walk, to extend his on-base streak to 20 games. Jordan Luplow, who hit a solo homer in the second inning, went 2-for-5 and was one of the runners who scored on Joe’s triple, after hitting a single. Cole Tucker and Taylor Gushue also had multiple hits.

Yeudy Garcia had a great start, giving up just one unearned run on four hits in six innings, with no walks and two strikeouts. He didn’t have a lot of strikeouts, but was very efficient and had good control, throwing 67 pitches, with 47 strikes. This wasn’t the case earlier in the year, when he had a lot of 20+ pitch innings, and couldn’t get this deep without approaching 100 pitches. Justin Topa, Junior Lopez, and Luis Heredia closed out the game with three shutout innings, taking advantage of all the run support.

The Black Bears held off a late Batavia rally to win 6-5 today. James Marvel returned for his first start since August 5th, getting a bit of a break in between, likely due to this being his first year back from Tommy John. He went four innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. His command was off, and led to an average of 20 pitches per inning. He was bailed out by Matt Frawley, who threw three shutout innings, while Morgantown scored four runs to take the lead.

The Black Bears were fueled by home runs by Albert Baur and Kevin Mahala in the late innings. Baur hit his second of the year, hitting a two run homer in the sixth inning that gave Morgantown a 4-2 lead. Mahala also hit his second homer of the year, with a solo shot in the seventh.

Sandy Santos had a big day, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Tyler Leffler also had a big day, going 3-for-4 with a double. The Black Bears almost lost the lead, with Billy Roth giving up three runs in the ninth, and leaving the tying run on base. Dylan Prohoroff came on and got the final out, securing the win.
