WBC Notes: Polanco’s Homer Helps Dominican Republic to 3-0 Win

On Thursday night in World Baseball Classic action, Gregory Polanco and Starling Marte were in the lineup at the same time for the first time, as the Dominican Republic defeated Venezuela by a 3-0 score. Polanco’ solo homer in the fifth inning was the first run of the game. He would later add a single. He is 8-for-15 in four games.

Marte started in center field and went 0-for-4 last night. This was just his second game of the tournament. Marte injured his ankle during last Wednesday’s exhibition game against the Pirates. After sitting out the WBC opener due to ankle swelling, he played on Saturday. The swelling returned after that game and that kept him out of action on Sunday against Colombia and Tuesday against Puerto Rico. Polanco started Thursday’s game in left field.

Team USA takes on Puerto Rico tonight at 10 PM. On Saturday night at 10 PM, USA and the Dominican Republic hook up for the second time in this tournament. The Dominican team won 7-5 in the first game. Both games will be shown live on MLB Network.
