Prospect Watch: Altoona Wins in Extra Innings; Indianapolis Drops a 13-Inning Contest

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time, or loses his prospect eligibility, he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the 2017 Mid-Season Update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Indianapolis lost 4-3 in 13 innings to Syracuse when they ran out of pitchers and had to go to catcher John Bormann for the final three innings. Dew Hutchison started and nearly put in six shutout innings, allowing a two-out solo home run in the sixth, before recording his final out. Edgar Santana and Johnny Barbato each put in a quick scoreless inning of work, but Brett McKinney blew a 3-1 lead with two runs in the ninth. Bormann actually threw two shutout innings before things fell apart in his third inning of work.

Indianapolis scored two runs in the fourth inning on a double by Jordan Luplow, then singles by Christopher Bostick and Danny Ortiz. Bostick would score on an RBI ground out by Edwin Espinal, which followed a wild pitch. In the eighth inning, Joey Terdoslavich reached on a pinch-hit double, then scored two batters later on a fielder’s choice/throwing error.

Luplow had two hits and a walk. Espinal, Bostick and Gift Ngoepe each had two hits. Kevin Newman saw his 14-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-5 day, but he gets an asterisk for dropping down a sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning, which led to the Terdoslavich run.

Altoona  won 6-5 in ten innings over New Hampshire on Sunday. The Curve tied the game with two runs in the ninth on a two-run double from Jerrick Suiter. In the tenth inning, Jin-De Jhang doubled, then scored on a Cole Tucker single.

The Curve had plenty of base runners in this game and they had trouble coming up with big hits until late in the contest. They finished 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position.  Cole Tucker had two hits on the day, but he also committed two errors. Pablo Reyes, who has been one of the best hitters in the entire system the last two months, had a single, two walks, an RBI and a run scored. Elvis Escobar had a single, double and drove in two runs.

JT Brubaker started and went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk. He had five strikeouts and a 10:3 GO/AO ratio. Sean Keselica allowed two runs in his only inning, while Tanner Anderson picked up the win with two scoreless frames.

Bradenton had their game canceled on Sunday due to rain. They don’t play Palm Beach again, so the game won’t be made up.

West Virginia lost 7-1, as Oddy Nunez appears to be tiring down at the end of a long season. He lasted just 2.2 innings in this game, giving up four runs. Two of the six hits were homers and he had two walks, while failing to pick up a strikeout. Nunez is at 103 innings this season, after 56.1 combined over his first two seasons. His velocity has also taken a slight dip as the season goes along. It might not be a bad idea for them to shut him down the rest of the way, maybe let him get some more innings next month in the Instructional League after a rest.

It may have also just been a strong team on the opposite end today. Pasquale Mazzoccoli allowed one earned run over his first 14 appearances this season, with the first five games coming with Morgantown. He was asked to pitch in long relief today and he gave up three runs over 4.1 innings. His previous high in innings was three while with Bristol last season. Angel German pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The offense had just three hits, with singles from Kevin Mahala and Garrett Brown, plus a double from Ryan Nagle. Oneil Cruz had three walks in the game, which is the first time that has happened during his brief two-year career.

Morgantown won 4-0 over Mahoning Valley on Sunday. Ike Schlabach last started on August 9th, getting an extended lay-off between starts due to pitching an inning in the NYPL All-Star game on Tuesday. The time off didn’t seem to affect him on this night. He threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks, while striking out three batters and posting a 7:3 GO/AO ratio. He has a 2.77 ERA over 55.1 innings this season. After Schlabach left, Blake Weiman and Matt Seelinger each tossed two shutout innings while putting one runner on base.

All-Star catcher Deon Stafford had three singles in this game, while picking up an RBI, stealing a base and scoring a run. Jared Oliva had a single and run scored. Chris Sharpe had a walk and run scored. Lucas Tancas had two hits to give him a ten-game hit streak. Raul Siri stole his tenth base and scored a run.

Bristol apparently won their 12th game on Sunday, unless there was a mistake in the MiLB boxscore. Domingo Robles pitched a terrific game, allowing one earned run over six innings. He allowed four hits, no walks, struck out five batters and had a 9:3 GO/AO ratio. This is the fourth time Robles has gone at least six innings. He lowered his ERA to 4.01 through 60.2 innings. Drew Fischer followed him and threw three shutout innings for the save, striking out five batters.

The Pirates got some big games from a few of their older players. Henrry Rosario went 4-for-4 with three singles, a triple, two runs scored, two stolen bases and two RBIs. Luis Perez drove in two runs. Matt Diorio had three hits and a run scored. Bristol went 5-for-7 in stolen bases. Edison Lantigua had a tough day, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
