Texas Rangers Claim Jhan Marinez from Pirates

John Blake of the Texas Rangers is reporting that the Rangers have claimed right-handed pitcher Jhan Marinez from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates designated Marinez for assignment on Saturday when they acquired Sean Rodriguez and George Kontos. Danny Ortiz was also designated for assignment that day and was optioned to Indianapolis after clearing waivers.

Marinez was originally picked up off waivers by the Pirates from the Milwaukee Brewers in mid-May. For the Pirates, he posted a 3.18 ERA and a 4.55 FIP in 34 innings over 24 appearances. He had 26 strikeouts and a 1.35 WHIP.

  • Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could all get fired and picked up by a new company within our field within 10 days? It’d definitely make my coaching career less stressful. Lol

  • I’d trade Hudson for 5 dollars cash.

    • 2 years/$11 mil? Unless he becomes a part of a trade, he will be a Pirate through 2018.

Yep, unfortunately you are right – Pirates seldom eat contracts, no matter how bad the player is….even when the contract is as miniscule as Stewart’s. Hudson will be back in 2018 so he can cost the team several more games next year….

he was a lot better than Hudson – we waived the wrong guy

  • Always seemed to give up runs every time he pitched

    • He appeared in 24 games and was charged with one or more runs in 9; he allowed inherited runners to score (but had no runs charged to him) in 4 others. So in 13 of 24 games in which he appeared, he gave up runs. More than half, which isn’t good (the much-reviled Hudson only gave up runs by this measure in 20 of 51 games), but not quite every time he pitched. (For that, you need to look at Bastardo – 8 of 9 games…)
