MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects Includes Three Pittsburgh Pirates

Published:

MLB Pipeline is going to announce their top 100 prospects list on MLB Network tonight at 8 PM. The hour long show will highlight the top 50 prospects, while also announcing the 51-100 prospects on their list. We’re posting this early to give you a chance to watch the program. The results will be posted below as they are announced for those who don’t watch.

We have already seen two top 100 lists released so far, with Baseball America and Keith Law both posting their lists earlier this week. The Pirates had two players on the BA list, with Mitch Keller at 12th overall and Austin Meadows at 44th. Law had four Pirates on his list, with Keller at 18th, Ke’Bryan Hayes at 61, Shane Baz at 65 and Meadows in the 70th spot. After we get a few more top 100’s (usually Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs), we will average out the results.

Pipeline had three Pirates in their previous top 100 update posted in late July, with Meadows, Keller and Baz in that order. They recently did their top ten by position and Keller was sixth among the right-handed pitchers, while Kevin Kramer was tenth for second basemen. Meadows, Baz and Hayes didn’t make top ten for their positions, but Hayes was an honorable mention, while Baz and Meadows both play the deepest positions in this current class, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see both on the top 100 list. Third base is also deeper than normal this year, but I’m not sure that they will go 11 deep with the top 100 to get Hayes on the list. We will find that all out soon enough.

Results are starting and Pipeline will have three Pirates on their list.

16. Mitch Keller

45. Austin Meadows

67. Shane Baz

Baz was #88 in Pipeline’s July rankings, so he moved up 21 spots. Meadows dropped down from 20th place. Keller was 22nd in July, so he moved up six spots.

** All three top 100’s have Keller in the 12-18 range.

** Baz now has ranks of 65, 67 and not in the top 100.

** This ranking for Meadows is just one spot off of BA, while Law had him 70th.

The full list is now up on their site.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
