The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right-handed pitcher Shane Carle and infielder Engelb Vielma for assignment, per a team press release. These moves are the corresponding moves for yesterday’s trades, which added Colin Moran, Joe Musgrove, and Michael Feliz to the 40-man roster.
Carle was originally drafted by the Pirates in 2013, and was later traded to the Rockies for Rob Scahill. He was placed on waivers by the Rockies earlier this month, and was claimed back by the Pirates. If they can get him through waivers, he could be a depth option for the MLB bullpen in 2018.
Vielma was claimed by the Pirates in December, and was claimed by the Phillies earlier in the offseason. He could provide depth for the team at second, third, and shortstop, with the shortstop position being his primary position. However, because he’s already been claimed multiple times this offseason, I could see him getting claimed by another team.
Tim started Pirates Prospects in 2009 from his home in Virginia, which was 40 minutes from where Pedro Alvarez made his pro debut in Lynchburg. That year, the Lynchburg Hillcats won the Carolina League championship, and Pirates Prospects was born from Tim's reporting along the way. The site has grown over the years to include many more writers, and Tim has gone on to become a credentialed MLB reporter, producing Pirates Prospects each year, and will publish his 11th Prospect Guide this offseason. He has also served as the Pittsburgh Pirates correspondent for Baseball America since 2019. Behind the scenes, Tim is an avid music lover, and most of the money he gets paid to run this site goes to vinyl records.
A shame Shane and ScrabbleTile were designated. Do you think both will get through?
Scrabble Tile…good stuff.
What? I’m done with this team.
Coward. It takes sand to stay with the Bucs.
I also like the team, but ownership doesn’t care about us. Just because someone isn’t a patsy doesn’t make them a coward. I also think he was joking about those players being designated.
Of course I was. Wrong tread, but our lineup is gonna be lefty heavy with Moran, Polanco, Bell, Meadows and could feature an infield of all lefties if Frazier and Moroff start at 2b And SS. I know that Moroff and Bel are switch hitters.
Not many LH SP in NL central.
i think that’s a good thing. I think they’ll be able to platoon the hell out of whoever the opposing pitcher is.
luplow-meadows. Freese-moran. the switch hitters. heck, all they need to do now is trade for Yasmani Grandal to platoon with Cervelli.
Playing Moroff at SS vs some righties is an interesting idea since Mercer is bad vs righties.
Aw, don’t take it personally. We don’t know what goes on in the front office. They have a budget, and spend what they do. Fixating on Bob Nutting will only bring you heartburn. Trust me, he’s not losing any sleep over you.
I don’t care. I didn’t lose any sleep over you either.
Tim,
When you get the chance, can you post
where the new guys would be on the service
(salary) scale (before arbitration? arbitration
etc?) as well as do they have options
remaining. Appreciate it.
Dave
Martin isn’t on the 40
Moran has 107 days and two options
Feliz has 2 years and 38 days, two options. He was sent down in 2016, but didn’t use an option because his assignment was less than 20 days.
Musgrove has 1 year and 63 days and two options left.
All three MLB players will be around minimum wage, none have reached arbitration yet and the Astros paid them near the minimum
MLB.com has Moran and Martin at their #’s 4 and 18 for the pirates. Where do you all feel they will slot?
We will post that info soon as an update to the ebook
Thanks! I pretty much knew you all would but it’s like the shiny new toy…need it now! lol
Thank you John.
And link the 2018 roster to the tabs at the top of the page too please.
Yes, can’t get the bottom choices on the drop down which includes the 40 MSN and future payroll commitments.
Yes, I was trying to guesstimate the payroll now. I have the 40 man at about $80-$85M, plus Rivero.
“AAAA” players that are plus defenders at SS are always nice to have around. I would’ve liked to see him stick around but he’ll probably get claimed. Oh, well. Engelb we hardly knew ya.
