Bryce Brentz Claimed by New York Mets

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that outfielder Bryce Brentz was claimed off of outright waivers by the New York Mets on Monday afternoon.

The Pirates placed Brentz on waivers on Saturday after they decided he wasn’t going to make the Opening Day roster. He was out of minor league options, so the only way the Pirates would have been able to keep him is if he cleared waivers. The Pirates acquired him for cash from the Boston Red Sox in February. The 29-year-old Brentz hit .250/.362/.350 in 17 spring games this year.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
