Calvin Mitchell Receives a Lot of Recognition for His Strong Week at the Plate

Published:

Earlier today, we posted our weekly recap of the top performers in the system. We expanded the article this year to add a 21st player, giving you ten hitters, ten pitchers and a Player of the Week. West Virginia outfielder Calvin Mitchell was named as our Player of the Week. That was just the start of his recognition for the big week he had from April 16th through April 22nd.

Mitchell was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. He was also recognized by MLB Pipeline, who put him on their Prospect Team of the Week.

In seven games, the 19-year-old left fielder hit .467/.500/.733, collecting 14 hits. Through 17 games and 74 plate appearances, he is hitting .364/.419/.652, which has him ranked fourth in the league in average, sixth on OBP, fifth in slugging and fourth in OPS.

We had him ranked as the 21st best prospect in the system in our 2018 Prospect Guide and also featured him on the back cover (#52).

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
