Prospect Watch: Bradenton and West Virginia Win with Late Home Runs

Published:

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time (Colin Moran and Edgar Santana), or loses his prospect eligibility (Kyle Crick and Dovydas Neverauskas), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our 2018 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Bradenton won 4-3 over Jupiter. Starter Cam Vieaux threw five shutout innings in his last outing, after beginning the year with two mediocre performances. On Thursday night on the road, he held first place Jupiter to one hit through the first five innings. He finished with two runs on three hits and two walks in six innings. Matt Eckelman picked up the win by pitching the finals two innings.

The Marauders trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth when Albert Baur gave them the lead with a two-run homer. He was a big part of the offense earlier in the game, scoring both runs while collecting two singles. Trae Arbet had an RBI double. Alfredo Reyes had a double and a run scored. Bligh Madris had two singles and was hit by a pitch. Tyler Gaffney failed to reach base safely in a game for the first time all season.

West Virginia won 10-8 over Rome on Thursday night. Mason Martin slugged a three-run homer as part of a six-run third inning. Deon Stafford and Ryan Peurifoy each added homers, with the latter being a three-run shot in the eighth inning with the Power trailing 8-7 at the time.

Starter Gavin Wallace allowed three earned runs in each of his first three starts this season. He limited the opposition to two runs in this game, but that’s because he left after three innings. Both runs scored on home runs. Hunter Stratton took over in the fourth and have his second rough outing since joining West Virginia. In 1.2 innings, he allowed three runs on three hits and four walks. He recorded all of his outs via strikeout. Blake Cederlind allowed three runs in 3.1 innings for the win, while Jacob Taylor got the save with a scoreless ninth.

Mason Martin’s home run was his fourth of the season. He also had a single, walk and two runs scored. Calvin Mitchell hit his sixth double, walked and drove in two runs. Rodolfo Castro had three hits, including his second triple. He had an RBI and two runs scored. Deon Stafford’s homer was his second of the season. He also singled and scored twice. Lolo Sanchez is in an 0-for-19 slump dating back more than a week.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
