Kevin Newman and Jason Martin are Both Named Player of the Week

Published:

In our The 21 article this morning, we named Kevin Newman as our Player of the Week, but mentioned that it could have easily gone either way between him and Jason Martin. Those two are in different leagues in the minors, so there wasn’t a need for MiLB to choose between them. Newman was named as the International League Player of the Week, while Martin won the Eastern League award.

Newman hit .500/.522/.773 in six games, collecting a total of ten hits over the final three games of the week. He hit his first home run on Saturday and picked up his 11th double of the season on Sunday. In 30 games with Indianapolis, he is hitting .309/.336/.423 in 123 at-bats.

Martin hit .474/.524/.685 in five games and connected on his fourth home run of the season on Sunday. Through 28 games with Altoona, he is hitting .346/.405/.606 in 104 at-bats.

You can read more about the recent week and season progress for both players in the article linked above.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
