Gunnar Hoglund and Braxton Ashcraft Appear Ready to Sign

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates took high upside right-handed prep pitchers with their 36th and 51st overall picks and it appears that both players are ready to sign.

Both Gunnar Hoglund and Braxton Ashcraft told their local media that they plan on going to Pittsburgh soon to sign their contracts. Hoglund said that he agreed to terms, while Ashcraft talked about not going to Baylor and enjoying his last few days before becoming a pro baseball player. There seemed to be little doubt about either player signing, especially with the slot money available for each pick. Once they sign, both players will go down to Pirate City in Bradenton and pitch in the GCL, which begins play on June 18th.

If we see any more rumored signings, we will post them here. That mostly applies to the third day picks because the Pirates went only with college picks on day two and it’s highly unlikely that they didn’t know asking prices before making the picks. Once you get into day three, you can get top options and fallback plans, so figuring out who is signing becomes a little more interesting than the guys who are 99% likely to sign in the top ten rounds.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
