Live Discussion: Pirates at Mets 7:10 PM

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates (37-42) take on the New York Mets (32-45) in game three of a three-game series. Ivan Nova is on the mound going up against Zack Wheeler.

The Pirates placed Sean Rodriguez on the disabled list today and added reliever Tanner Anderson to the roster. For those who asked about the backup shortstop, I’ll say that this is most likely a one day move due to the bullpen usage yesterday and then a shortstop will be added before Friday’s game. If the Pirates need a backup shortstop tonight (or second base) the bigger problem would be why they need it and not who will stand there for a few innings in one game.

To answer the question though, probably David Freese would play second base and either Mercer would still be at shortstop or Josh Harrison would move over. Freese has played second base with the Pirates, so I think he could be a field ornament there for a few innings if needed.

Other news today:

Some kid named Keller got promoted to Indianapolis.

Jung Ho Kang and Christopher Bostick are also hurt…on the same day Bostick made the All-Star team along with two teammates.

Pirates signed another non-drafted free agent and this one comes with a scouting report.

Here are the lineups:

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
