Pirates Recall Jacob Stallings; Option Adam Frazier to Indianapolis

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled catcher Jacob Stallings on Sunday. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, they have sent Adam Frazier to Indianapolis.

The Pirates lost Francisco Cervelli during yesterday’s game after he took a foul ball off the mask. He left with an injured left jaw and it appears now that he is unavailable for today, but they don’t want to make a roster decision on him just yet. If he’s eventually placed on the disabled list, then the Pirates can bring Frazier back and keep Stallings as the backup.

Frazier has not hit well this season, with a .237/.318/.356 slash line in 56 games. He has started just three games over the last 16 days. For now, I would still expect him back either right away if Cervelli goes on the DL, or after ten days if he doesn’t. We will know more in the coming days, but don’t rule out someone else at Indianapolis taking his place while Frazier is allowed to get some consistent at-bats.

Stallings was hitting .294/.341/.399 in 40 games for Indianapolis this season.
