Prospect Watch: Michael Burrows Continues No-Hit Streak; Calvin Mitchell Homers

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Colin Moran, Nick Kingham, Edgar Santana, Kyle Crick, Max Moroff and Dovydas Neverauskas), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2018 Mid-Season Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Indy

Indianapolis lost 4-1 to Lehigh Valley in the first game of a doubleheader.

JT Brubaker got in one scoreless inning on Friday before the rains came. When they resumed play on Saturday, Tyler Eppler took over and he went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, with three strikeouts. It’s his seventh straight appearance with at least three earned runs allowed. Nick Burdi was out next and he struggled, facing four batters before reaching his 20 pitch limit. He had a strikeout, two walks and he gave up a hit. Jesus Liranzo finished the seventh and stranded three runners, then AJ Schugel took over in the eighth and gave up a solo homer.

Before the game was suspended yesterday, Max Moroff hit a solo homer, his seventh for Indianapolis. In the final 7.1 innings, they got a single from Kevin Kramer and a double from Pablo Reyes. That was it for hits. Moroff and Kramer drew the only two walks. Jason Martin went 0-for-3 to extend his slump to 6-for-71 in 19 games.

Prospect-Watch-GCL

The GCL Pirates won 12-2 over the Phillies East.

Michael Burrows made his third start, though his second one was suspended in the third inning and needs to be completed next week for the stats to count. Burrows allowed a chopper up the middle to the first batter he faced in pro ball and the second baseman had a chance to make the play, but his throw wasn’t strong and it was offline. Since that first batter two weeks ago, Burrows has thrown nine no-hit innings, including four on Saturday morning. It wasn’t a perfect game, as he did walk three batters and hit another, while picking up just one strikeout. It’s still impressive to see an 18-year-old give up one hit in nine innings (or no hits if you want to just count after the first batter) and that hit didn’t even leave the infield.

On offense, the two big bats continued their onslaught of GCL pitchers. Jack Herman went 2-for-3 with his second home run. He is now hitting .378 and will take a 19 point lead into the final week of the GCL season on Monday. The Pirates have seven games remaining. Pat Dorrian went 3-for-5 with his sixth triple and he drove in three runs. He has 34 RBIs now, which is five behind the league leader, who isn’t in the league anymore. Samuel Inoa had three hits and an RBI. Joseivin Medina had two hits and drove in two runs.

Prospect-Watch-DSL

The DSL Pirates1 lost 4-0 to the Rangers1

Starter Valentin Linarez went three innings, giving up three runs. He was followed by Starlyn Reynoso, who finished out the game with one unearned run in five innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

The offense barely showed up. Five players had one single each and no one walked. The Pirates actually had a scoring opportunity in the sixth when Jommer Hernandez singled to lead-off the inning, then after he moved to second base on a passed ball, Rayvi Rodriguez reached on a bunt single. They were unable to get anything in the inning despite two men on, no outs and the top of the lineup coming up. Juan Pie went 0-for-4 in this game. He’s hitting .262/.389/.436 in 54 games.

Here is the boxscore from the MiLB site.

The DSL Pirates2 lost 2-1 to the Mariners

Estalin Ortiz went 4.2 innings on Saturday, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks, while striking out six batters. Carlos Campos allowed one run over 2.1 innings while striking out four batters. Miguel Diaz and Wander Romero each threw a scoreless inning.

An RBI double by Bryan Mateo accounted for the only run. Pedro Castillo, who went 1-for-2 with a walk and his tenth stolen base, scored the run. Daniel ANgulo hit a triple. Juan  Mena had two hits. Angel Basabe went 0-for-4 with an outfield assist. He’s hitting .274/.359/.440 in 46 games.
