Chad Kuhl has Tommy John Surgery

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Thursday afternoon that Chad Kuhl had Tommy John surgery yesterday and he will be out 14-to-16 months.

Here’s the press release from the team:

Chad Kuhl underwent right elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery by Dr. David Altchek at HSS in New York yesterday afternoon. Typically pitchers return to Major League competition at an estimated 14-to-16 months.

Kuhl has been rehabbing the injury since he was placed on the disabled list in late June. He recently suffered a setback in his rehab and had the elbow checked out again. It was then that they decided that surgery was the best option. Due to the timing of the injury, he still would have missed all of 2019 if he had surgery in early July, so attempting rest and rehab first was the best option. Even the longer possible return to action would have him ready to go at the beginning of Spring Training in 2020.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
