Live Discussion: Pirates vs Brewers, 1:35 PM; Marte Leaves Early

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates (78-75) take on the Milwaukee Brewers (88-67) for three games at PNC Park this weekend. In game three on Sunday afternoon, Nick Kingham will be facing left-hander Wade Miley. In 73.2 innings this season, Miley has a 2.08 ERA, with 47 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP. He has faced the Pirates twice this season, allowing two runs over five innings in each of those games.

** Joe Musgrove told the local media after last night’s game that he could have pitched today if needed, but with the Pirates facing elimination from the playoffs with a full week remaining in the season, it was best to just begin his rehab from an injury that has been bothering him on and off since July. Their Wild Card elimination number is down to two after the Cardinals won yesterday. Nick Kingham will get Musgrove’s last two starts.

** Clint Hurdle said that Edgar Santana will see a doctor tomorrow about his elbow/forearm issue that came up on Friday night and caused him to leave the game early.

** While I always think it’s better to give the young players as much playing time as possible in September, today could be the last home game for both Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer as members of the Pirates, so it’s nice to see them start together. I’m guessing both will be removed in the middle of the game after a hit, or after they take their position mid-inning, so they can hear it from the fans.

Here are the lineups:

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
