Pittsburgh Pirates Mini-Camp: Day One Discussion Thread

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates are holding their annual winter mini-camp at Pirate City this week. The four-day event is voluntary for any player on the 40-man roster and also includes some prospects not on the 40-man roster. Tim Williams will be providing live coverage of the camp. Players have been arriving since last night and more usually show up as it goes along. As I said, it’s voluntary for 40-man roster players, so they might be there one day, all four days or not at all.

So far on Monday morning we have seen the following players (partial list): Gregory Polanco, Luis Escobar, Eduardo Vera, Jesus Liranzo, Brandon Waddell, Alex McRae, Geoff Hartlieb, Blake Weiman, JT Brubaker, Nick Burdi, Steven Brault, Joe Musgrove, Cole Tucker, Kevin Newman, Steven Baron, Richard Rodriguez, Christian Kelley, Patrick Kivlehan, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Arden Pabst, Jason Martin, Jason Delay and Bryan Reynolds.

Players hit the field at 10 AM. Check back for updates throughout the morning and early afternoon.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
