Winter Leagues: Playoff Action from Four Countries Over the Last Three Days

Published:

Three days worth of winter league action, though not much happened on Monday and Wednesday. We start with the only two players to see action on Monday night.

In Venezuela, Jose Osuna (pictured above) went 0-for-4.

In Colombia, Edgar Barrios went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored in his team’s 15-5 loss.

Tuesday

In Venezuela, Jose Osuna was the DH and went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Through five playoff games, he is 5-for-20 at the plate. Three of those hits came during the playoff opener.

In Puerto Rico, Rodolfo Castro was the DH and he went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. His team had just two hits in a 4-0 shutout loss. Castro is 1-for-6 through three playoff games.

Jordan Jess pitched in relief a week after starting the playoff opener. He faced two batters, allowing a single and a walk. Neither run scored. Jess threw three shutout innings in his start last week.

In Colombia, Carlos Arroyo went 1-for-3 with a run scored in his team’s 4-3 win.

Edgar Barrios was on the losing side of the lone playoff game in Colombia. He started at shortstop and went 1-for-2 with a single before leaving for a pinch-hitter. He is 3-for-16 through five playoff games.

Wednesday

In Colombia, Carlos Arroyo was the only player of note to see action, as three of the other leagues were off. He went 0-for-3 in his team’s 2-0 loss. Arroyo is now 3-for-17 through five games.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
