Pirates Notes: Preview of the Possible Opening Day Lineup

The Pittsburgh Pirates lost 6-3 to the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland on Saturday afternoon. Chris Archer started and had a rough outing, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, a walk and a hit batter. He picked up four strikeouts. Archer was followed by Michael Feliz, who allowed two runs in his second inning of work. Jake Barrett was out next, making his debut with the Pirates. He threw a shutout inning, giving up two hits, while striking out one batter. Clay Holmes and Geoff Hartlieb took the final two frames and threw a shutout inning each.

The Pirates had just four hits (all singles) all game, but managed to push three runs across the plate. Their big hit was a two-run single by Bryan Reynolds. Will Craig walked in all three of his plate appearances and he scored a run. Kevin Newman and Jacob Stallings each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Sunday’s Action

The Pirates are celebrating St Patrick’s Day at home against the Boston Red Sox at 1:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet. Jameson O’Taillon will get the start for the Pirates.

Here’s the lineup, which looks a lot like a possible Opening Day lineup:

The late inning replacements (in order, same positions as above, minus the pitcher spot) will be Kevin Kramer, JB Schuck, Patrick Kivlehan, Will Craig, Steven Baron, Jose Osuna, Ke’Bryan Hayes and Pablo Reyes. Christian Kelley and Daniel Amaral will be extras on the bench.

Taillon will be followed today by Francisco Liriano, Nick Burdi and Brandon Maurer.

Monday’s Action

The Pirates will be taking on the Tampa Bay Rays on the road tomorrow, with a 1:05 PM start time. Nick Kingham will get the start. He will be followed by Kyle Crick, Richard Rodriguez and Tyler Lyons. At Pirate City, Jordan Lyles will be throwing a simulated game.
