Pirates Re-Sign Eric Wood to Minor League Deal

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have re-signed third baseman Eric Wood to a minor league deal on Friday. He became a free agent this off-season and signed to play in Taiwan. He was released just two games into the season, reportedly after the team’s manager tried to physically attack him after the game.

Wood played for the Indianapolis Indians last year, where he hit .269/.328/.481 in 86 games, while seeing time at first base, third base and right field. He also played left field in 2017. Wood missed time last year with a right pinky fracture in June and a hamstring injury in July.

The 26-year-old Wood was the sixth round pick of the Pirates back in 2012.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
