The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed shortstop Erik Gonzalez on the 60-day injured list with a left clavicle fracture, and have placed center fielder Starling Marte on the 10-day injured list with an abdominal wall contusion. Those were the corresponding moves for the additions of Cole Tucker and Bryan Reynolds. Gonzalez going on the 60-day IL also clears the necessary 40-man spot for Reynolds.
This means that Tucker will have a lengthy opportunity to show what he can do in the majors. He’s the only shortstop on the roster right now, and should remain the starter when Kevin Newman returns, although Newman should get a good amount of work as well. As for Reynolds, I’d expect him to stay up until the rest of the outfielders start to return, and his ability to play center field could keep him up until Marte returns.
