Keone Kela Shut Down During Rehab

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that right-handed pitcher Keone Kela has been shut down during his rehab assignment and he won’t throw for the next ten days.

Kela is dealing with right shoulder discomfort, which is what landed him on the injured list back on May 8th. He made one rehab appearance with Indianapolis back on May 25th and gave up three runs in his only inning of work. Kela returned to Pittsburgh after that game to be reevaluated and now they have decided to shut him down from any action. While with the Pirates this season, he had a 4.63 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP in 11.2 innings over 14 appearances. He had 11 strikeouts and a .239 BAA.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
