Prospect Watch: Pat Dorrian and Ji-Hwan Bae Lead Greensboro to Win

Published:

P2 Top 30A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Kevin Newman, Nick Burdi and Bryan Reynolds), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Travis MacGregor and Stephen Alemais), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2019 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Indy

Indianapolis took the first game of a doubleheader with Pawtucket, 5-3.  The top of the order keyed the offense, as Cole Tucker went 2-for-4 with his fifth double and Jake Elmore went 3-for-4.  Logan Hill clubbed his first career AAA home run and Will Craig added his twelfth double.  Indy had ten hits and five walks in the seven-inning game.

Alex McRae gave up three runs over six innings.  He allowed six hits and a walk, and struck out four.  Montana DuRapau threw the last inning for the save.

Here’s the boxscore.

Indianapolis got stomped, 8-0, in the second game.  It was a 2-0 game until Jake Brentz entered in the sixth with a man on and two out.  He gave up a two-run home run, then let the first five batters reach in the seventh.  In the end, he was charged with six runs, two unearned, while retiring only one batter.

Rookie Davis started the game, his first rehab outing, and gave up a run in three innings.  Luis Escobar threw two scoreless innings in his first relief appearance after five straight starts.  He gave up two hits and a walk, and struck out one.  Conceivably, the Pirates could be getting Escobar ready to work out of the major league bullpen.

The Indians had six hits and a walk, but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.  The hits were all singles except for a double by Darnell Sweeney, who made his first appearance since signing a minor league deal with the Pirates.  He played second and went 2-for-3.  Eric Wood also had two hits.

Greensboro got arguably a career-best start from Colin Selby in a 5-2 win over Kannapolis.  Selby gave up a run on just three hits over six innings.  He walked nobody and struck out five, while throwing 50 of 69 pitches for strikes.  Braeden Ogle threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.  He gave up a hit and struck out two.

Pat Dorrian had the big day on offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.  He’s batting 327/389/612 in 14 June games.  Ji-Hwan Bae had two doubles in four times up, giving him six doubles on the season.  Lolo Sanchez had his sixth triple, tying him for the league lead.  Justin Harrer had two hits and Jack Herman hit his third home run.  Mason Martin and Rodolfo Castro had their fifth and sixth steals, respectively.

Wilbur Miller
Wilbur Miller
Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
