Calvin Mitchell Named Player of the Week by the Florida State League

Published:

On Monday afternoon, the Florida State League named outfielder Calvin Mitchell as their Player of the Week. As mentioned in our top performers article this morning, he was having a big week for the Bradenton Marauders before he drove in seven runs on Sunday. In total last week, he hit three homers and drove in 13 runs, while putting up a .500/.571/1.167 slash line.

Through 87 games this season, Mitchell is putting up a .264/.311/.443 slash line, with 19 doubles, two triples and 13 homers. He was named to the FSL All-Star game back in early June and won MVP honors that day. Mitchell is tied for fourth in the league in homers, tied for eighth in doubles and ranks fifth in slugging. That’s all coming from someone who was the sixth youngest player in the FSL on Opening Day.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
