Prospect Watch: Altoona Gets Two Hits, Whiffs 17 Times, and Still Wins

Published:

P2 Top 30A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Clay Holmes, Jacob Stallings, Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Travis MacGregor, Nick Burdi and Stephen Alemais), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2019 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Indy

Indianapolis got blanked by Toledo, 5-0.  The Indians managed only five singles, two each by Jake Elmore and Darnell Sweeney, and one by Trayvon Robinson.  On the rehab front, Erik Gonzalez was 0-for-4 and has a .379 OPS with Indy.  Gregory Polanco was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Alex McRae started and got banged around for nine hits and four runs in five and two-thirds innings.  He walked two and struck out nobody.  Geoff Hartlieb had a good outing, retiring all seven batters he faced with two strikeouts.

Ke’Bryan Hayes got beaned in the fourth inning, causing the benches to empty.  Hayes stayed in, but Blake Weiman got ejected.

Prospect-Watch-Altoona-Curve

Altoona got only two hits but still beat Erie, 3-2.  Bligh Madris had an RBI single and a two-run double, so he accounted for all the hits and all the runs.  Jared Oliva was 0-for-1, but he scored two of the runs after drawing walks.  He also got hit by a pitch and stole two bases, giving him 24 on the season.  He’s been caught only five times and is second in the league in steals, well ahead of the #3 guy.  Chris Sharpe fanned all four times up, and Logan Hill and Robbie Glendinning each struck out three times, as the Curve went down on strikes 17 times.  That was in just eight innings, as it was a home game.

Domingo Robles had a good start, allowing just an unearned run in five innings.  He gave up five hits and a walk, and struck out four.  Blake Cederlind threw an inning and a third without allowing a hit or a run.  He struck out two and stranded two inherited runners.  Angel German and Matt Eckelman each threw one scoreless inning.

Prospect-Watch-Bradenton

Bradenton had their home game against Florida postponed due to rain. The two teams meet again for one more series in mid-August in Florida (Kissimmee), so they will need to make the game up then.

Greensboro had their game versus Lakewood canceled due to rain. The two teams don’t meet again this season. Osvaldo Bido tossed a scoreless inning before it went into a delay. His stats won’t count. After the non-game, Mason Martin got promoted to Bradenton.

Prospect-Watch-Morgantown

Morgantown lost to Auburn, 8-7, in ten innings.  The Black Bears took a 7-3 lead into the eighth, but Noe Toribio, who’d been pitching well, gave up two in the eighth and two in the ninth to blow the lead.  Auburn then got the free runner home in the tenth and the Bears couldn’t counter.

Starter Will Kobos continued to struggle, giving up three runs in three innings, leaving his ERA at 10.61.  Winston Nicacio threw two scoreless innings.

Morgantown had plenty of scoring opportunities, as they totaled 15 hits.  Blake Sabol had a big day, driving in four runs with two singles and his first pro home run.  Will Matthiessen and Luke Mangieri also had three hits each, with Matthiessen getting his first double.  Jared Triolo and Kyle Wilkie also doubled, their eighth and third, respectively.

Prospect-Watch-Bristol

Bristol won its fifth in a row and tenth of twelve, beating Pulaski, 9-3.  Tahnaj Thomas seems to be making gradual progress.  He went four and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs, one of which scored after he left.  He allowed five hits and walked only one, while striking out seven.  Yordi Rosario threw a scoreless inning and a third, although he let one of Thomas’ runs score.  Enrique Santana and Ryan Troutman each contributed a scoreless inning.

Josh Bissonette led the offense, driving in four runs with a single and his first double.  Jesus Valdez had a single and a triple, and Samuel Inoa also had two hits.  Jake Wright hit his first double and Chase Murray scored two and drove in two, despite going just 0-for-1.

Wilbur Miller
Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
