Prospect Watch: Calvin Mitchell Hits a Walk-Off Grand Slam in Extra Innings

Published:

P2 Top 30A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Clay Holmes, Jacob Stallings, Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Travis MacGregor, Nick Burdi and Stephen Alemais), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2019 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Indy

Indianapolis lost 15-5 to Syracuse. Eduardo Vera’s start today couldn’t go worse than his last one, when he allowed nine runs in 1.2 innings, but he wasn’t much better in this game. Vera gave up seven runs over four innings and had some wildness that we never see from him, even on his worst days. He walked four batters and hit two others. Yefry Ramirez followed with a nice outing compared to the rest of the game, giving up one run over three innings. Dovydas Neverauskas pitched the final two innings and got smacked around for seven runs. He had allowed a total of eight runs all season for Indianapolis prior to today.

Darnell Sweeney and Jake Elmore provided much of the offense, with Sweeney hitting his second homer and fourth double, while Elmore had three hits and two runs scored. Ke’Bryan Hayes had two singles and two RBIs. Will Craig had an RBI single and a walk. Erik Gonzalez began a new rehab assignment after missing five days due to a hamstring strain. He went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts. Gonzalez started the game at shortstop, then moved to second base for the last two innings.

Prospect-Watch-Altoona-Curve

Altoona won 6-5 over Trenton. Brandon Waddell was continuing his strong pitching at Altoona until they tried to stretch him out longer tonight and things went bad late. He gave up four runs in the sixth inning while recording just one out. He finished with five runs and eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Waddell threw 99 pitches tonight, 18 above his previous high this season. Jesus Liranzo followed Waddell, and while his line says he threw 1.2 scoreless innings, he allowed two inherited runners to score. Angel German got the win with a scoreless eighth, followed by Matt Eckelman picking up his 18th save with shutout ball in the ninth.

Jared Oliva had a nice day at the plate, collecting two triples, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Logan Hill had a single, double and sacrifice fly, which led to four RBIs. He has 20 doubles with Altoona this year and he hit another four while with Indianapolis. Robbie Glendinning, who has been quiet lately, picked up three hits.

Prospect-Watch-Bradenton

Bradenton won 7-3 over Clearwater in ten innings. This was a 1-1 game at the end of nine innings, then both teams put up crooked numbers in the tenth. The big blow was a walk-off homer by Calvin Mitchell, his 12th of the season. He also had a walk and a single. Lucas Tancas provided the only run before extra innings for the Marauders. He hit his sixth home run in the sixth inning, as part of a four-hit day. Travis Swaggerty went 1-for-5 and he’s now 3-for-19 since his 12-game hit streak was snapped last Thursday. Oneil Cruz has been strong since he returned to action, but he had a rough day today, going 0-for-4 with two errors.

Nicholas Economos continued to pitch great, going seven innings with one run on two hits and a walk, with seven strikeouts. He has a 2.01 ERA in 11 starts with Bradenton.
