Jonah Davis Named South Atlantic League Player of the Week

Published:

The South Atlantic Leagues named outfielder Jonah Davis of the Greensboro Grasshoppers as their Player of the Week. He hit .417/.464/.958 in six games, collecting four home runs and driving in eight runs.

Davis got off to a very rough start this season, which led to him being sent back to Extended Spring Training on May 18th. He was with Morgantown when their season opened up in mid-June, but wasn’t playing every day. He went 0-for-13 with five walks while with the Black Bears, before returning to Greensboro. Since that point, he has hit .289/.357/.578 with ten home runs in 34 games.

We talked about Davis this morning in our top performers article. He was a very close second in our Player of the Week race, though we use Sunday-Saturday for our stats and this award from the SAL is for Monday-Sunday.

Davis won Player of the Week twice last year in the Appalachian League with Bristol.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
