Published:

The South Atlantic League named their End-of-Season All-Star team on Tuesday afternoon. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Greensboro Grasshoppers are represented on that list by first baseman Mason Martin.

Martin only played in the SAL until July 6th when he was promoted to the Bradenton Marauders. He left Low-A ball as the league leader in in OPS, slugging percentage, homers and RBIs. Martin hit .262/.361/.575 with 45 extra-base hits in 82 games with Greensboro. Since being promoted, he has hit .232/.326/.512 in 46 games with the Marauders. He has hit a total of 34 homers this season and picked up 125 RBIs.

He’s the third league all-star so far for the Pirates out of three leagues that have announced the winners. Jared Oliva made it for the Eastern League, while Francisco Acuna made the Appalachian League team.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
