Prospect Watch: Great Outing from Osvaldo Bido; Clay Holmes Make Rehab Appearance with Altoona

Published:

P2 Top 30A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Clay Holmes, Jacob Stallings, Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Travis MacGregor, Nick Burdi and Stephen Alemais), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2019 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Altoona won 6-5 over Richmond. Nicholas Economos got the start and allowed two runs over five innings. That was quite an impressive final line because both runs scored in the first and Richmond loaded the bases with no outs in the third. Economos got a huge lift from poor base running in that third inning when a bases loaded hit turned into an out at the plate instead, with Chris Sharpe unable to catch the ball, but he was able to throw the runner out at home for the force out. Economos breezed from that point on to get through five innings. Clay Holmes followed in his first rehab outing and allowed three runs over two innings on four hits and a walk. Cody Ponce then retired the final six batters of the game on 16 pitches, picking up three strikeouts.

Chris Sharpe had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a single and a double. He scored three runs. Oneil Cruz had two singles and drove in two runs. It took him eight games to collect his first single in Double-A. He was 3-for-22 with two doubles and a triple prior to this game. Jared Oliva stole his 32nd base.

Prospect-Watch-Bradenton

Bradenton had their game suspended with a 2-1 lead over Charlotte in the bottom of the eighth, which was extra innings in this instance, being the first game of a doubleheader. These two teams were supposed to play five games in three days and it’s the last time they meet, so with rain in the forecast tomorrow, we could have as many as three games completely wiped off the schedule. Osvaldo Bido pitched brilliantly for 7.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks. I entered his stats above in the top 30, but they won’t be official until (if?) the game is completed. That would be a tough line to lose, but it looks like they should be able to play Wednesday.

Greensboro lost 4-3 to Greenville. Steven Jennings started and allowed two runs in both the first and second innings. He took the loss, but finished off his night with three shutout innings. Jennings has a 5.14 ERA in 105 innings this season. Winston Nicacio tossed the final three innings and retired all nine batters he faced, four on strikeouts. In 12 innings with Greensboro, he has allowed one earned run and struck out 15 batters.

Jonah Davis, who was the South Atlantic League Player of the Week, went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, stolen base and run scored. Jack Herman had a double, walk, RBI and an outfield assist. Ji-Hwan Bae had a single, RBI and his 20th stolen base. Connor Kaiser had a single, walk and run scored.

Morgantown won 5-2 over Mahoning Valley. Braxton Ashcraft got his ninth start and he went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, with three strikeouts. He threw 56 of 89 pitches for strikes. Ashcraft now has a 5.68 ERA in 44.1 innings. Francis Del Orbe followed and he tossed three shutout innings on one hit and one walk. Jacob Webb lowered his ERA to 1.93 with a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Brett Kinneman got the scoring started with a two-run double in the second inning. Kyle Wilkie added a two-run single in the third inning. Cory Wood capped off the scoring with an RBI ground out in the third. Blake Sabol had three walks and a run scored. Matt Fraizer had two walks, a single and a run scored. Matt Gorski hit his eighth double and also added a walk. Jared Triolo had a single and a walk.

Bristol lost 8-5 to Danville. Dante Mendoza started and went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Matt Eardensohn followed and gave up three runs over 2.1 innings. Saul de la Cruz finished things up with two runs over 1.2 innings.

The offense was led by a two-run homer from Jean Eusebio, his second of the season. He also had two walks, including one with the bases loaded. Samuel Inoa had three hits, a walk and two runs scored. Jesus Valdez and Jake Wright each had two hits. Yoyner Fajardo made his Bristol debut off the bench and went 0-for-1, which finishing the game in left field.

The DSL Pirates1 won 4-3 over the Indians. Darwin Baez had a single, his 13th double and drove in two runs. Juan Jerez struck out in each of his first three at-bats, then came up big in the ninth with a two-out, walk-off bases loaded single. Eliazer Montero had a single, walk, run scored and his tenth stolen base. Sergio Campana had two walks, a run scored and two stolen bases, giving him 15 steals on the season.

Listher Sosa started and allowed one run over four innings, while picking up six strikeouts. Carlos Campos followed with three shutout inning. Jordy Ortega threw a scoreless eighth, but couldn’t close out a 3-1 game, giving up two runs before he could record an out. Kelvin Disla picked up the last three outs to get the win.

Despite the win, the Pirates1 were officially eliminated from the playoffs. Any of the players on this team would be eligible to play on the Pirates2 during the playoffs. The Pirates2 clinched their division on Saturday.

Here’s the boxscore.

The DSL Pirates2 lost 11-6 to the Giants. Jorge Ramos has pitched well this season, but he struggled on Monday. He gave up four runs on five hits and two walks in five innings, giving him a 3.12 ERA on the season. Oscar Echarry allowed four runs in the sixth inning, followed by three runs charged to Wilbur Martinez in his lone inning of work. Darvin Garcia threw 1.2 scoreless frames.

The Pirates got a home run to lead-off the game from Deivis Nadal, his third of the season. He also walked, was hit by a pitch and scored two runs. Rodolfo Nolasco hit his fifth home run of the season. Randy Romero, who is leading the league with a .406 average, had a single, RBI and a walk. Alexander Mojica was a mid-game replacement and he reached in all three trips to the plate, with a single and two walks.
