Prospect Watch: Mason Martin and Travis Swaggerty Help Bradenton to Doubleheader Sweep

Published:

P2 Top 30A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Clay Holmes, Jacob Stallings, Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Travis MacGregor, Nick Burdi and Stephen Alemais), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2019 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Indy

Indianapolis won 5-3 over Rochester on Wednesday afternoon. Brandon Waddell struggled badly in his first three starts back with Indianapolis, but this is more like the player we saw in Altoona. He went six innings, giving up one run on four hits, with no walks and six strikeouts. Sean Keselica followed with two scoreless innings, before Jake Brentz gave up two runs in the ninth.

The Indians got on the board in the first with an RBI ground out by Jason Martin. Christian Kelley brought home two runs in the second with his eighth double. In the fourth inning, Trayvon Robinson made it 4-0 with his seventh home run. Cole Tucker capped the Indianapolis scoring with an RBI single later in that fourth inning. Tucker had two hits in the game and stole his 11th base. Eric Wood had two hits and scored two runs. Jake Elmore had a pair of hits and scored one run.

Prospect-Watch-Altoona-Curve

Altoona won 3-0 in ten innings over Harrisburg. Except for a little bit of an issue with his control, Cam Vieaux’s return to Altoona was a very successful one. He tossed six shutout innings on two hits, with four walks and three strikeouts. He now has a 2.56 ERA in Double-A, which is nearly half of the 5.05 mark he put up with Indianapolis. Jesus Liranzo followed with two shutout innings. He has an 0.40 ERA since being sent to Altoona in late June. Blake Cederlind took over in the ninth and sent it to extra innings with a scoreless frame, then closed out the win with a 1-2-3 tenth.

The Curve had a hard time on offense until the tenth inning. With the free runner on second base, Oneil Cruz brought in the first run of the game with a single. That was followed by Logan Hill’s ninth home run to make it 3-0. Hill also had a single and his 25th double. Darnell Sweeney had two hits and a walk. Altoona had seven base runners before the tenth inning. Three of them were thrown out stealing and one was thrown out trying to take an extra base. A fifth runner was taken off the bases on a double play.

He has given up one run over his last 19.2 innings (three starts). Shea Murray closed the game out with two strikeouts in the seventh. Dylan Busby hit his 19th home run of the season. Rodolfo Castro drove in a run with his seventh double and also added a walk. Travis Swaggerty hit his 15th double. Adrian Valerio went 3-for-3 with three singles.

Here’s the boxscore.

The Marauders won game two by a 5-1 score. Ike Schlabach got the spot start and he went five innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks, with three strikeouts. He now has a 2.56 ERA in 46.1 innings this season. Schlabach gave the ball to Nick Mears, who closed it out with two scoreless innings.

Mason Martin hit a grand slam during Sunday’s game. Four games later, he has just one hit in 14 at-bats and it was a third inning grand slam that gave the Marauders a 5-0 lead. He now has 32 home runs on the season, eight since joining Bradenton on July 9th. Travis Swaggerty had three hits, including his 16th double. He scored a run, picked up an RBI and stole two bases, giving him 21 steals on the season.

Will Gardner followed with two shutout frames. Michael LoPresti came on for the eighth and did a number to his ERA, giving up seven earned runs before outfielder Justin Harrer came on for the final out.

The Grasshoppers had no runs or extra-base hits, so there isn’t much to talk about on offense. Kyle Mottice picked up the Kyle Mottice trifecta, collecting a single, walk and HBP. Ji-Hwan Bae had two walks and his 27th stolen base. No one else reached base more than once.

The DSL Pirates1 nearly had a no-hitter, but instead they ended up losing 3-2 in 11 innings. Joelvis Del Rosario went the first five innings without a hit, though he did give up an unearned run.
