Live Discussion: Pirates vs Cardinals, 7:05 PM

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates (62-79) take on the St Louis Cardinals (79-62) for three games at PNC Park this weekend. The Pirates are sending out Steven Brault, who has a 3.88 ERA in 95 innings, with 80 strikeouts and a 1.40 WHIP. He has a 3.38 ERA in 15 starts this season. Brault also has a 3.63 ERA at home this season and a 3.41 ERA since the halfway point of the season. He has not fared well against the Cardinals this year, posting a 9.90 ERA and a 2.20 WHIP over two starts and one relief appearance.

The Cardinals are countering with veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright, who has a 4.30 ERA in 142.1 innings, with 131 strikeouts and a 1.42 WHIP. This will be the fifth time he is facing the Pirates this year. Here are the previous results (asterisk next to PNC Park games):

*April 1: 4 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO

May 10: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO

*July 24: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO

August 10: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO

What those numbers apparently say about today’s game is that he’s going to allow four runs tonight, but still win the game because the Cardinals won both of those games at PNC.

** James Marvel is starting tomorrow. We will have more on him after the move to add him to the 40-man is announced. That will most likely just be placing Jason Martin on the 60-day injured list. Mitch Keller has been pushed back to Tuesday.

Here are the lineups:

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
