OOTP: Mitch Keller Takes on the Cubs

The following is part of our simulation of the 2020 Pittsburgh Pirates season, using Out of the Park Baseball (OOTP). We simulate the season each day, as it was originally scheduled, and with no input from any of us, all to give you a Pirates team to follow this year. You can follow the simulation by inning and make it seem like a game, or you can skip to the end and find out what happens.

Mitch Keller takes the mound in game two of this three game series against the Chicago Cubs.

This is the game from Wednesday night. The Thursday game was cancelled, due to weather, and will be made up as part of a double-header on September 22nd.

Lineups

1st Inning

Ian Happ reached on a bunt single. Baez flew out to left. Bryant singled, moving Happ to second. Schwarber struck out. Caratini singled, scoring Happ. Contreras doubled on a line drive down the first base line, scoring two more runs. Heyward grounded out to third.

Newman struck out. Frazier hit a solo homer to left-center. Bell singled. Reynolds doubled to right, with Bell stopping at third. Polanco struck out. Stallings flew out to left.

Cubs 3, Pirates 1

2nd Inning

Almora grounded out to short. Jason Kipnis enters as a pinch hitter and drew a walk, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Happ and Baez struck out.

Alec Mills comes in to replace Lester. Hayes strikes out. Heredia draws a walk. Keller sacrifices him to second with a bunt. Newman flies out to right.

Cubs 3, Pirates 1

3rd Inning

Bryant walks. Schwarber strikes out. Caratini grounds into a 3-6-3 double play.

Frazier grounds out back to the mound. Bell walks. Reynolds singles, moving Bell to second. Polanco grounds into a 4-6-3 double play.

Cubs 3, Pirates 1

4th Inning

Contreras singles to right-center. Heyward singles, moving Contreras to second. Almora singles on a line drive to right, loading the bases. Alec Mills doubles on a line drive to center, scoring two runs. Blake Weiman comes in to pitch for the Pirates. He gets three fly ball outs on four pitches.

Stallings grounds out to second. Hayes walks. Heredia grounds into a 6-4 fielder’s choice. Weiman strikes out.

Cubs 5, Pirates 1

5th Inning

Schwarber strikes out. Caratini walks. Contreras singles on a line drive to right. Caratini tries for third, but is thrown out by Polanco. Heyward grounds out to first.

Newman leads off the fifth with a solo homer to left. Frazier flies out to left. Bell strikes out. Reynolds flies out to right.

Cubs 5, Pirates 2

6th Inning

Weiman retires the Cubs in order with two ground outs and a fly out.

Trevor Megill enters the game for the Cubs. He sets the Pirates down in order with two ground outs and a fly out.

7th Inning

Baez flies out to left. Bryant grounds out to third. Dovydas Neverauskas replaces Weiman. Schwarber flies out to left.

Heredia grounds out to second. Kevin Kramer enters as a pinch hitter and is hit by a pitch. Newman grounds out to short, with Kramer moving to second. Frazier grounds out to short.

Cubs 5, Pirates 2

8th Inning

Edgar Santana enters the game. Caratini doubles down the third base line. Contreras grounds out to short. Heyward is intentionally walked. Almora flies out to right. Nick Markakis enters as a pinch hitter and flies out to right.

Brandon Morrow comes on to pitch for the Cubs. Bell grounds out to third. Reynolds strikes out. Polanco singles to left. Stallings walks. Hayes flies out to left.

Cubs 5, Pirates 2

9th Inning

Happ strikes out. Baez grounds out. Kyle Crick enters the game. Bryant walks. Schwarber grounds into a fielder’s choice.

Craig Kimbrel enters to close it out for the Cubs. Heredia strikes out. Christian Walker enters as a pinch hitter and strikes out. Newman grounds out to second.
