AFL Recap: Peoria Loses a Tough One as the Final Week of the Season Starts Off Poorly

Published:

Monday began the final week of the Arizona Fall League season. Ji-hwan Bae was the only member of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the starting lineup today, as Peoria was on the road to take on Glendale in a game scheduled for seven innings. He was batting second and playing second base. He also ended up being the only Pirates player to appear in the game. Here’s a recap:

Bae grounded out to second base to start the game. He flew out to right field in the third inning. He tried to bunt for a hit in the sixth and was thrown out by the pitcher. Bae was called out on strikes in the seventh inning. His team lost 2-1 on a walk-off single in the seventh. He went 0-for-4, knocking him down to a .237 average and a .675 OPS. He’s just a few games removed from being one of the top average/OBP hitters in the league, showing how small of a sample size this season has been so far.

Here’s the boxscore

Peoria is at Mesa tomorrow night at 8:35 PM ET, with Roansy Contreras making his final AFL start. On Wednesday afternoon, Michael Burrows is the scheduled starter. Peoria trails by two games in the standings, so every game is a must win at this point with four games left.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
