AFL Recap: Quiet Day for the Pirates Prospects in Peoria Loss

Published:

Yesterday’s Arizona Fall League recap was one of the better ones, as five Pittsburgh Pirates saw action and all five contributed to the win. Wednesday’s recap won’t be as exciting. Canaan Smith-Njigba batted fourth as the DH, the only Pirates player in the lineup. Not only that, this game was scheduled for seven innings, so it wasn’t even a full game. Here’s the obviously quick recap:

Smith-Njigba came up with two runners on in the first inning and grounded out to second base, which allowed both runners to move up 90 feet. He grounded out to second base again in the fourth, this time leading off the inning. In the sixth, he singled to lead-off the inning, then stole his fifth base of the fall season. He finished 1-for-3 with a steal. He’s now hitting .268 with an .802 OPS.

Ji-hwan Bae pinch-hit in the seventh inning and struck out. He’s hitting .309 with an .858 OPS.

Peoria dropped to 8-9 on the season with a 4-2 loss.

Here’s the boxscore

Peoria plays tomorrow afternoon at 3:35 PM EDT. They will be home to take on Scottsdale.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
