Winter Leagues: Roberto Perez Will Begin Playing on Sunday

Published:

The action was very light on Sunday, but almost every team in winter ball has off on Monday, so there’s no use saving this information for another day. While only three Pittsburgh Pirates players saw action on Sunday, we had some news out of Puerto Rico, where the league is still shut down due to a COVID outbreak. Luckily for the league, everyone involved in the league had to be vaccinated first, so despite 39 reported cases, news from the league said that just a small handful of those players were experiencing any symptoms, and all were mild. We will have a new player to follow this upcoming Sunday (December 26th) in Puerto Rico, as Roberto Perez is scheduled to start playing. He has played eight seasons of winter ball, but the last time he played was 2018-19, and that was in the Dominican. The last time he played in his home country of Puerto Rico was during the 2015-16 off-season.

As for the on field action…

In Colombia, Francisco Acuna went 0-for-3 with a run scored. He’s now hitting .154/.283/.154 in 12 games.

In Mexico, Randy Romero had a 1-for-6 night with his ninth double, a run scored, an RBI and an outfielder assist. He’s now hitting .296 in 64 games. He ranks third in the league with 15 steals.

Jared Oliva went 1-for-5 with a single and left seven men on base. He’s now batting .235 with a .644 OPS in 28 games.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
