Prospect Watch: Second Rehab Start for Luis Oviedo; Mlodzinski on the Mound for Altoona

Luis Oviedo will get his second rehab start for Bradenton today. He threw one scoreless inning in his debut last week. Carmen Mlodzinski also gets his second start. He gave up five runs in 3.2 innings in his Altoona debut. Indianapolis has been snowed out.

Carmen Mlodzinski wasn’t great on Thursday night, but it was much better than his season debut. After allowing five runs in 3.2 innings last week, he gave up two runs over four innings tonight. He surrendered three hits, two walks and he struck out five batters. He threw 43 of his 66 pitches for strikes. Enmanuel Mejia followed with two shutout innings on one hit, one walk and one strikeout. JC Flowers came into the day with two shutout innings and left with a 9.00 ERA after allowing three runs on four hits in one inning of work. Austin Roberts took over in the eighth and tossed a scoreless frame, despite allowing two hits and a walk. Altoona lost 5-4 to Richmond.

Lolo Sanchez had the big hit in the game, driving in two runs with his first homer of the year. Andres Alvarez hit his second homer and stole a base. Connor Scott is hitting .538 after collecting two hits and also drawing a walk. Nick Gonzales drew three walks and stole his first base of the season. He also scored a run.

Game Recap:

Adrian Florencio was the Pitcher of the Year last year for his dominating work in Bradenton. This year has not started off well. He lasted just 1.2 innings in his debut, giving up three runs (two earned) and three walks. He did much better comparatively, but it was not a good performance on Thursday night. He allowed one run over three innings, despite giving up four hits and five walks. He threw 39 of his 70 pitches for strikes. Logan Hofmann followed with three runs (two earned) over 2.2 innings. He had some unusual control trouble as well, walking four batters. Ricky DeVito was out next for his second appearance with the Pirates. He went 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.

The top of the order was bad in the 6-5 loss. Hudson Head, Maikol Escotto, Henry Davis and Matt Gorski combined to go 1-for-18 with a single. Ernny Ordonez hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, which was the big hit for the Grasshoppers. Dariel Lopez had a walk, single and two runs scored. Yoyner Fajardo had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Game Recap:

Bradenton lost 9-5 to Lakeland on Thursday night. Luis Oviedo made his second rehab start and it did not go well. He had 1.1 innings with no hits and one strikeout, but it came with three walks, a hit batter and just nine of his 30 pitches went for strikes. Valentin Linarez followed and he had a really rough outing, going one innings, with six runs on five hits and two walks. Darvin Garcia followed with two runs over 1.2 innings. Denny Roman settled things down with three shutout innings and four strikeouts. Jake Sweeney finished off the night with one run over two innings. Tsung-Che Cheng had himself quite a day with two singles and two walks in four plate appearances. He had a run and an RBI. Jacob Gonzalez had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Wyatt Hendrie hit his second double and his first homer.
