The Pittsburgh Pirates (15-19) travel to Wrigley Field on Monday night to take on the Chicago Cubs (13-20) in the first game of a three-game series. Dillon Peters (3-1, 1.83) will be on the mound for the Pirates, facing off against veteran lefty Wade Miley (0-0, 9.00), who is making his second start of the season. He pitched three innings in his debut last Tuesday.
The Pirates picked up catcher Tyler Heineman on Monday.

So, in turning to conspiracy theories to entertain my Pirates anger, I’m now wondering, how much of this is Travis Williams fault? Murphy and I were earlier discussing the NHL and their LOOOVE of retreads. I just started thinking Travis probably had huge influence in hiring a MLB retread in Ben, and probably pushed it as a “known name” move.
8-0 after the first inning and it wasn’t even a Mitch Keller start… sigh
I thought Beede was a LHP based on the picture posted on this site (I think).
Surprised to see him throwing RH
We don’t have any photos of Beede and we don’t use outside photos. You were probably looking at Cam Alldred, who was optioned when Beede was added so he got the cover photo for the article.
17 pitches, 8 strikes. A new Pirate pitcher has arrived.
They’re stretching Wilson out so Peters only has to face one hitter next start
I have a trivia question for all of the Pirates history buffs. In franchise history, 141 seasons, which two pitchers have the worst win-loss percentage (at least 25 decisions)? I’ll give you a hint, they start the next two games versus the Cubs
keller and brubaker.
what’s that? no i didn’t see that on your twitter account!
Yeah right, out of all of the 965 pitchers in Pirates history (including Beede tonight), you just happened to “guess” correctly with my vague clue
fun trivia question though!
Since the Dodgers series, the Pirates are batting .133.
Well, that Reds pitching is devastating
i’m sorry to keep bringing it up….and i know hitting coach is an extremely tough and thankless job. but the hiring of haines was so uninspiring. and the results so far have been predictable.
He’s the coaching equivalent of VanMeter.
We were able to grab a live reaction of Tyler Heineman upon finding out he was claimed by the Pirates
What’s funny about this is that I was just saying the opposite. The guy is almost 31 years old with under a full year of service time even counting this season and he was just sent to the minors. He was probably ecstatic that a bad team got him. He’s making more this year than he ever has before. Each day he’s in the majors he’s probably adding a week to the vacation time he can take before he gets a real job after baseball. I was actually a bit happy for him, especially with him being a catcher.
That is likely true. But I also think of how no hit catchers with some experience always seem to find a spot somewhere. In addition to how even players like Knapp and Marisnick clearly waited till the LAST minute to sign, as they were probably holding out, hoping anyone else would sign them.
Knapp went to ST with the Reds and signed with the Pirates right after he was cut. Marisnick did the same, except with the Rangers
And that actually makes it worse, like Vanmeter, that THOSE teams walked away from them, and Ben still thought them to be viable acquisitions. Marisnick made some nice catches, but the fact we’re at a point we have to spin a handful of highlight reel catches as the only positive is sad.
What it boils down to is that three of the worst teams in MLB got rid of those guys in an effort to improve and the Pirates picked up not one, not two, but all three.
Ah, did not know that. Didn’t read that much into their situations lol
You got it wrong. He’d be celebrating, because he can play like a zombie and Ben & Derry will be just fine with that.
don’t worry everyone. highly acclaimed and coveted hitting coach andy haines will help make these hitters better
I think he is making the hitters worse. If that is possible.
and isn’t he in charge of the organizational hitting program??
Explains a LOT.
Silk purse from sow’s ear?
I bet Newman comes back in a couple weeks reinvigorated with a new batting stance!!! Ready to hit balls into the dirt. Again.
Hitting balls into the dirt, Hayes’ ears are burning. Hayes will be a .600 OPS guy by mid season with 10+ errors!
Royals fired their hitting coach today…….so it is permissable.
Maybe the Pirates will fire Haines to hire the Royals coach. He has the perfect name for Pittsburgh, though he looks nothing like the QB.
Has BC hired him yet?
Not defending the hitting coach, but look at what he has to work with! Hard to make even lemonade!!!!
Interviewing tomorrow. The key to the job is saying he just wants the hitters to have fun up at the plate.
Once he says hi my name is Terry Bradshaw, BC will say you’re hired. He will tell the media, if he can win 4 Super Bowls, there is no reason he can’t help us win a World Series pennant.
i mean. that’s basically why cherington was hired. because he won a world series.
I love the teams enthusiasm…..coach
Is more about having fun……
I have no doubt that Shelton would make a great 12U baseball coach. I’d love to see him get that opportunity.
My neighbor stole my wife, the bank repossessed my car and my son kicked me out after a week of living with him. The church counselor asked aren’t you even a little embarrassed by all this and I said nah….I’m a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirate fan!
I should’ve just went ahead and installed my truck bed cover. Alas, I didn’t want to leave my son unattended too long inside. For fear he might’ve actually figured out how to turn on the Pirates game and watch too long.
Eleven innings streak without a hit…….see if you squint hard enough you’ll see something fun to watch this game.
Now 12. Three seasons now. Not in my lifetime has there been a Pirates’ GM with BC’s ability to assemble a more embarrassing bunch of helpless hitters. It’s really astonishing just how bad BC is at his job.
In retrospect, the decision to NOT deal Bell at same time as Marte (or at least at the 2020 restart) should’ve been alarm “Bells”. #1 that he didn’t attempt to extract full value when the allure of Bell’s 2019 first half still lingered. #2 that he was willing to just let things draaaaaaag on. #3 that I thought of while typing this, upon keeping Bell, that we weren’t going to actually see positive trends in them “unlocking” player’s talent.
I actually created a quick spreadsheet earlier. Took all minor league players with at least 20 PA’s this season (I ended up with about 45 prospects) and logged their current wRC+. I then logged their 2021 wRC+ and created columns of the difference, along with percentage change. Very SSS, but, it was sad how few players have a positive change this season. Let alone maintaining their previous season’s production. So sad I then deleted it lol
I’ve spent the last couple days, off and on, trying to think of something BC has done well, and I can’t. Nearly the entire farm system has taken a step back. The spectacle of pitchers going elsewhere and immediately getting far better has continued. They have yet to develop a non-terrible SP. BC’s waiver claims have undermined the few relievers who’ve performed well. The defense this year has gone backward. The hitting at the ML level may have been the worst in team history for a stretch this long. His first draft is looking like a fiasco. We can’t tell much about the ballyhooed second draft because all the key guys except Davis are at Pirate City, but given the poor play throughout the system so far, I’m having trouble looking forward to seeing them. The FO and staff have shown zero ability to transition prospects to the majors. They haven’t come up with a single good position player other than guys they inherited, unless you want to count Vogelbach, except of course he can’t play a position. Shelton imo is the team’s worst manager since Lamont.
More and more, I’m reaching the conclusion that BC is shockingly incompetent.
What is most depressing to me is that Cherington heaped praise on Shelton after last season despite the team just finishing the worst two-year stretch since the early ’50’s. Of course Shelton has returned the favor by repeatedly citing how innovative the organization is under Cherington despite no evidence that we’ve gotten any better at developing players.
And given that Williams is not a baseball guy, I don’t think there will be any accountability from above Cherington. Maybe if the local media start raising questions, Williams or Nutting will feel some pressure to make a change. But to this point the local media seem to still be in their honeymoon phase with Cherington.
I’m feeling he’s more of a Dombrowski, whose obvious flaws are hidden by the ability to spend freely. They got the dumbed down version of Jim Rutherford, but without the existing competent roster.
He got a guaranteed 6-year deal from Nutting that is allowing all of the above. Kids that are far far away from the show. No urgency. Of course, they don’t even have the transparency that most (all) other teams have to disclose what his deal is.
I’m old enough to remember when the Pirates got a hit.
Myth, pure myth.
Does anybody ever mention to these players before they take the field that these teams are actually behind us in the standings???
I read an article about Phil Mickelson and, when I looked at the score, the Pirates were down 8-0.
This is why I don’t read, is it on video?
That will teach you to read articles about Phil Mickelson, lol.
How long was the article? One paragraph?
I love tuning in to find out the game is over in the 1st. Fun!
I hope I don’t get company or I’ll have to explain why I have this paper bag over my head😁
Peter’s and Wilson……classic regression to the mean.
I’m afraid they regressed to the mean and then just kept on going to the other side of the mean.
I grimace everytime I hear these broadcasters lay all that adulation on Peters.
Lol holy $#@+
This is very impressive. It’s hard to field a team this bad unless you don’t have any money. Oh, yeah, that explains it.
Umm, they do have money. They just don’t spend it.
Is it my imagination or does Bryse Wilson suck?
I shudder to think how many runs Tyler Beede is going to give up.
The whole team sucks!
Ever see the movie “The Cooler” with William Macy starring as The Cooler?
Bob Nutting is MLB version of The Cooler. Everyone who comes to play for him has their luck change for the worse.
You honestly think this level of incompetence has anything to do with luck?
Lol…..gonna have to find that movie! I can see william Macy in such a role!
Fun movie. I saw him and his wife having dinner at a little Thai place in Santa Monica (I was there before him, so no stalking!).
He might have been stalking you!
Only 17 more runs to go for the Cubbies
Check that 13 more runs.
And here I thought this lineup looked interesting enough to watch this game, with no MiLB tonight.
This looks like 21-0 Part II to me.
BTW, color me impressed you’re Double A already. People love you obviously.
It’s quantity over quality. I just post a lot of comments. Mostly in minor league game thread lol
Shelton started warming up Wilson 4 pitches into Peter’s start… I don’t get it. I mean, hindsight is 20/20, Peters is getting beat up rn. But why start Peters if you’re going to take him out immediately?
The Cubs’ line up is predominantly right handed, Wilson should’ve started. Then again they both suck.
That was the plan.. Peters was only pitching 1 inning no matter what.
Castillo on the bench again. Seems he’s fallen out of favor lately – only 1 start in the OF and one at SS in the last 5 games – and he was pulled from one of those for VanMeter.
Is he hurt?
Well he might be pitching mop up again later….maybe around the 4th inning or so.
Well you can’t sit Yoshi against a left hander……😆
Yoshi actually has reverse splits throughout career. He has always hit lefties better than righties.
Volgebach is horrible against lefties, he should have sat. Is a bad team no matter how you cut it, so it is what it is.
I agree. Vogelbach has been decent, but he sucks against lefties. He should never start against a lefty.
I’m going to go out on a limb and GUARANTEE the Pirates get more hits tonight than yesterday.
Unfortunately can’t make that same guarantee about runs though. We are talking about the Pirates bats after all.
Guarantee that the Cubs will have more runs than Pirates hit, I’m cheating a bit…..
