The Pittsburgh Pirates (18-25) are on the west coast for a three-game series against the San Diego Padres (28-16), starting tonight at 9:40 PM. The Pirates will send out Jose Quintana (1-2, 2.43) for his ninth start of the season. He will be opposed on the mound by lefty pitcher Sean Manaea (2-3, 4.04), who will also be making his ninth start. He has a 1.12 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 49 innings.
If you missed it from last night, Yoshi Tsutsugo was placed on the injured list. Tucupita Marcano was recalled to take his place.

UPDATE: Ke’Bryan Hayes was out of the lineup today due to back discomfort, then the Pirates lost Michael Chavis in game:
Michael Chavis left the game with left forearm discomfort. It's tied to him being hit by a pitch Wednesday. He's being examined and treated. He's day-to-day.

Another loss pulled from the jaws of victory. Crowe has been mostly good out of the bullpen this year, so I won’t be critical of him But why do the Pirates keep Underwood and pitch him in close games? He is terrible …why not de Los Santos?
From the postgame comments I don’t understand,
“That old cliché that one play doesn’t lose you a game, but man, this sure feels like it,” VanMeter said. “That’s a play that’s got to be made, whether I’ve played over there or not. “That sucks.”
“I got lost watching the play and didn’t find the bag. Make a mental mistake, and good teams capitalize on it.”
“It’s a tough situation,” Shelton said. “We lost Chavis during the game, and [VanMeter] just got behind the bag.”
Added VanMeter: “I think I make that play 10 times out of 10, 99 times out of 100. That happened to be the one time. … Terrible feeling, but the good thing about baseball is there’s another one tomorrow, and I can make up for it tomorrow.”
Sadly he’s right because he will get another chance and another chance and another…..
I’m trying to understand this comment, he’s a second baseman, second baseman cover first on bunts/ wheel play, so this is something that he should have done many times before it. Let’s not lose track of the fact that Crowe hung a slider to a hitter that had trouble fouling off 90 mph fastball.
Good points on both. I fully expect to see him in the lineup tonight and one of the kids sitting. And to me nothing says you don’t even trust your own organization to not try Yerry instead of Underwood who never really pitches in that situation. I wouldn’t doubt Shelton thinking he better use his veterans trying to save his and VanMeter’s asses. If that’s the case it backfired. I really believe not using Yerry who has been pitching in those situations for a couple of years now granted in the minors it shows he thinks he’s smarter than the Pirates system which when you look at Yerry’s numbers it’s worked for him.
I know VanMeter didn’t intend his comment this way, but I’m glad that he added “whether I’ve played over there or not” to call attention to the fact that Shelton should share some of the blame. Did Shelton take any accountability? Of course not. Players lose games by “not executing”, coaches win games by their “brilliant” deployment of players. When that deployment backfires, it’s still on the players.
In this case, not sure it is Shelton’s fault that we don’t have any other first baseman on the roster right now
I’ll tell you what is Shelton’s fault and that is the fact he had no game plan at all in effect when he lost both catchers in the same game. It’s rare but its possible for that to happen as we all saw. It appeared he either picked VanMeter or josh volunteered but you should have a plan for an emergency catcher and let him work with your catchers a little here and there. And from VanMeter’s footwork at first base last night apparently it was the same situation as the catching fiasco.
BAD organizations lose games like that.
VanMeter cost us this game
time to make a change before tomorrow’s game
Mason Martin up Vanmeter dropped from the 40 man
Oneal Cruz up and Chavis to the DL
We should all be frustrated with VanMeter but I wouldn’t ignore the irony that an organization that prides itself on position flexibility put a guy at 1B who has played one game there in the last two seasons. From personnel decisions to deployment it’s a poorly run organization right now and with the GM and manager regularly praising each other, I’m not confident it’s going to get better anytime soon.
Fortunately we may have enough young talent with the Pirates and in AAA and AA that we’ll soon be winning our share of games anyway. Shelton will never optimize use of players as we saw with the OF earlier this season. But if your only options are Mitchell, Suwinski, Reynolds, and Gamel, no manager can botch that up too badly.
As long as Shelton has any say about anything you won’t see VanMeter gone. Shelton was just another minor league player who sees himself in VanMeter as just a guy who had all heart and desire but not real everyday major league talent.
VanMeter is the new Chris Stewart…
Oh hell no. Stewart was a back up catcher and a pretty good one at that. He was 1+ WAR his first two seasons here – great for a back up catcher. Vanmeter plays a position where the Pirates have a glut of young talent they need to look at, so all Vanmeter is doing is denying playing time to the kids while providing below replacement level value.
Big ask facing machado, hosmer and Myers. Underwood was not as sharp as last outing.
Underdog not really a high leverage guy. His stuff can be good in a limited roll mid game but he and Stratton shouldn’t be pitching the eighth with the game on the line.
I’m retiring for the night, night you all!
We got an out! We got an out!
Lol! Why carry 14 pitchers and why call Yerry up if you are going to run the same guys out that keep proving they aren’t up to the task. If you want to move forward let guys like Yerry prove whether they can handle it or not.
I’m not confident when Shelton has to manage a bullpen at this point. If Bednar were an android it would be no problem. Win or lose he has to give Yerry a shot in key situations to see if he’s the guy to bridge the late gap to Bednar simply because he has no one else.
Official scorer has changed the hit by Hosmer to an error on VanMeter
Justifiably so!
Quintana is smiling now 🙂
I can deal with whoever is at C. But if you replace VanMeter, this looks like a competent ball club tonight. VM is the reason it’s not still 3-0 🤷♂️
So what does Q fetch us in July if his ERA is still <4?
Probably what Anderson got us last year, not a lot!
Eh Anderson’s era last year was over 4 IIRC, if Quitana’s era is still under 3 in a few weeks he will get us some more. Not a top 100 or anything but somebody worthwhile IMO
nothing worth much like Carter Bins
better to extend Cantina
I wasn’t going to stay up for the whole game but I need to watch the VanMeter first base experience play out, lol. I also like watching sunrises, sunsets and car crashes and train wrecks😁
It’s going to get brutal next week with late nights from L.A.
I’ll be at the game Monday!
I hope you’re good luck, lol.
Yeah and especially if they keep playing competitive baseball. With Shelton that’s unlikely. I bet you could have put Reynolds at first base and you wouldn’t have known the difference.
Come on Castro, you are due!!!!!
I would love to see Castor hit so maybe he could stick because I like his enthusiasm which is something you don’t see much on Pirate teams.
Brown praising Mitchell’s AB despite Mitchell swinging at what would have been ball 4 and then taking what should have been called strike 3.
Lol, baseball.
Someone needs to tell Walk that Q is worried about his era, not about getting himself a W. Lol.
And they should be unearned, lol.
Scorekeeper’s gotta change that overnight, or Pirates send request to MLB. That would give Q no earned runs allowed.
I hope so, he deserves better.
It’s an error, just checked box score. Q is happy!
Thanks and I’m happy too. Quintana with another great outing. A guy like this can only help your team and young pitching staff.
well, that sucks….let’s get some back now!
Is it me or has Luke Voit lost about 30 pounds?
Considering he doesn’t look like Vogey anymore I would say yes.
Fuck
for a right fielder, Mitchell sure has a nancy arm
I do not understand why VanMeter wasn’t charged with an error.
Maybe Shelton paid off the scorekeeper.
Got a call there. I’ve greatly enjoyed the commentary from Kasperski, NMR (though he’s very high and mighty) and Rican over the years. The old format didn’t let me log in but just figured I’d try for some late night Buc’n
Preach Walkie!!
Haven’t posted in about 3 years but happy Crowe Day
Welcome back!
Happy Crowe Day Y’all!!!

Not really.
We need him to bail a clueless Shelton out!
OMG, Brown said Shelton talked about VanMeter sharing first base with Chavis while Yoshi is out. This is Hurdle/Srod all over. If these guys haven’t figured yet out that you can put a guy at any position it doesn’t mean he can competently play it.
I don’t trust Brown anymore—he’s been all bs propaganda ever since the new administration took over. No credibility.
VanMeter plays 1b same way he plays catcher, bad.
VanMeter’s below average when he’s playing anywhere. Expecting him to play out of position is ridiculous and experimenting with it may well cost this game. Bring up Martin and stop pretending he needs more time at Indy.
I dump on VanMeter a lot but that move shows how fricking clueless Shelton is!
Kebryan is only position player left besides Perez. And he may not even be available.
Chavis hurt?
Looks like he hurt his hand on a swing and miss. Let’s hope it’s not a broken hamate bone.
Indy kind of looking like the parent club before all the call ups.
Castillo goes deep
Bad call. He was going deep on the next pitch 🙂
I’m with you, lol.
Well if Chavis is out for an extended time, we might finally see Martin come up
VanMeter playing 1b? No way Martin is getting the call now.
who is going to play first base in the top of the inning?
Wondered about that myself. Lose the Dh if you use Gamel.
Loved the earlier homer by Reynolds but two more ground balls since. He has turned into a ground ball machine and not many are getting through.
The Pirates look like a MLB team tonight.
I hope they don’t mess too much with the coaching at the lower levels because the guys they bring up seem ready to play.
Pretty stark contrast to the guys that came up under Huntington.
team feels more fun recently
Diego doesn’t want to go back in the damn closet.
It almost feels like the only hole in our lineup is at catcher.
These two are now on a 1-for-36 run. So “hole” barely describes it.
“One hit, that’s all they got, one goddamn hit?”—Harry Doyle
You’re use of that is always spot on Bob, lol.
Gaping wound?
Yeah, but VanMeter🤯
Playing like a team with no automatic outs.
I would’ve never guess that Quintana has a faster fastball than Manaea.
Chavis hand is not right. Who ya goin’ call…..? Mason Martin.
Yeah he didn’t look good on that swing and miss
which prospects do yinz want to trade for Bungarner?
Noob Tootblan
David Whitehead
Tony McKnight
Extend Quintana
Might be cheaper than a FA. I think the fact that he’s willing to mentor Contreras is another plus!
Wish they had a team option for year 2. Going to be tough to retain him.
If he’sd go for a 2-year deal I might risk it. More than that probably no.
I’d do that. It’s worth some risk to try to get an actual starter settled in the rotation.
Not a very active discussion tonight. All the old geezers must be in bed already LOL.
I resemble that, lol.
I wasn’t expecting much tonight between the late start and it being Friday night. That’s a double whammy. People are either out doing something or home dreaming about doing something
Or, home getting stoned, having a vodka soda, eating a meatball sub , and watching the game after getting home from his side hustle working at a sports card shop. Total hypothetical situation…
Which places you squarely in the second group there
Kinda surprising Preller flipped Adam Frazier so quickly. And then he brings on Cano? Croneworth isn’t anything special. Think it just came down to not being willing to pay Frazier, Padres are maxed out on payroll.
hoping we start hearing about a contract extension for Cantina
lets go bucs!
Ready for Reynolds, Mitchell and Suwinski to take off on the this road trip. Great start with Reynolds.
Hayes out due to a minor back issue.
Backs are never good to hear. Hope it’s minor.
Castro is likely to lose that prospect tag and become a regular old baseball player tonight. Needs four at-bats, so I’m assuming that’s why he is batting lead-off. I asked this before, but it’s been about two weeks so I’ll ask again here. Besides Castro, you had four guys with prospect status in the lineup (just means that they don’t have more than 130 career at-bats yet). How many of the four do you think lose that status during this stint on the Pirates roster (meaning if the player is sent down in a week, the answer is no for him, even if he returns for the rest of the season in July/IL trips don’t count against them). Here are their names and their at-bats going into tonight:
Castillo 101
Suwinski 80
Heineman 78
Mitchell 9
I’m going out on a limb and saying all of them. Mitchell’s approach at the plate has been so great all of this year, so I could see him sticking. Even if Castillo or Suwinski go down, I think they will get to that 131 number before it happens.
First time I answered, I thought only Castro would make it. Since then Newman’s DL stint takes him out until July and Suwinski is making good solid contact. That creates a clear path for those two. I’m still a “no” on Heineman, think they’ll DFA him for another waiver wire backup catcher. Mitchell is just too far away, that’s a sucker bet (even though I’m a total stan for him).
So Castillo and Suwinski yes, Heineman and Mitchell no.
Yeah the Newman re-injury really changed things, but then Vogelbach and Tsutsugo and maybe now Chavis getting hurt changed everything for me, plus Allen being slightly behind on his return. It has opened up more spots for prospects to play. I flipped my vote on Heineman just today because he started over Perez. It was no until today. Now I’m not sure he would be the first to go.
Well John as a baseball historian you know how much fate has played into it’s history!
I agree and especially with your comment on Mitchell’s approach all year. I was totally surprised that he basically believed in his own process when he got to the big club. Hopefully our accolades don’t jinx him in front of his hometown crowd.
A double to start things off seems like a nice jinx-breaker
Hit the ball hard on his second ab also.
Who is the next one up? I’m thinking Cruz, maybe Bay.
Can’t bring Bae up they have VanMeter.
They can put him in right field.
Agree!
I say all six of them. What? There are two guys in Indy that in my opinion, but who cares what I think, should be and I hope will soon be in Pittsburgh in addition to the guys mentioned and once here should stay. Everyone knows who they are. I just watched one of them, who has brought his batting average up by something like 18 points in the last week, hit another gigantic home run. I have a difficult caring much about Heineman though because he’s basically a place holder prospect or not.
I know the name of this sight is Pirate Prospects, but it’s time to stop thinking having a lot of prospects is a good thing. Get them up here and let them learn and develop in the majors.
I agree, all of them. Hopefully we’ll cut bait with several of the guys that are currently on the IL once they return (briefly).
