The Pittsburgh Pirates (16-22) take on the St Louis Cardinals (21-18) in game two of a three-game series on Saturday night starting at 6:35 PM. The Pirates are sending out Jose Quintana (1-1, 2.19) for his eighth start of the season. He will be going up against 22-year-old Matthew Liberatore, who will be making his big league debut. He had a 3.83 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 40 innings at Triple-A this season.

Might as well save Bednar for tomorrow with this teams offensive capabilities.
I saw something interesting the other day, which probably won’t matter, but it would be crazy if it did. Albert Pujols dropped below 100.0 career WAR last year. He needed 0.5 this season to get back there, which probably isn’t going to happen (he’s at -0.1 now before tonight). His pitching performance recently knocked 0.1 WAR off of his career mark. Imagine if he ends at 99.9 and it’s because he got beat up as a pitcher for an inning
Considering he was only the 21st player to get there that’s kind of a bummer. Am I correct in thinking Babe ruth is the only guy that pitched on that list other than Pujols relief appearance?
Walter Johnson, Cy Young, Clemens, Seaver, Lefty Grove, Mathewson, Spahn, Randy Johnson also 100+ WAR.
Apparently some all-timers also saw relief pitching opportunities. Cobb, Speaker, Wagner, Ted Williams all threw an inning or more. Musial apparently came in once and didn’t get an out.
Lol, didn’t think about the fact I was looking at list of position players only. Thanks for pointing that out.
that would be kinda funny if it happened
Just to put Reynold’s ITPHR in perspective, he did it in 16.4 seconds. Bryan Buxton holds the record at 13.85 seconds.
Replays showed he jogged to first assuming it was gone. He didn’t start sprinting until he rounded first.
Neither did Buxton.
Will Craig did his at Altoona in 16.0 seconds. I think Reynolds would have done better if he didn’t watch the ball so long out of the box. He can’t be slower than Craig
Suwinski’s snakebit. Hitting a lot of atom balls
How can we start 4 guys in the lineup who can’t hit the Mendoza line, and you have a DH?
Fwiw Suwinski has zero PA’s at AAA, Castillo has 70 and Castro has about 154 at AAA and 100 in the majors but is still the youngest of the three having turned 23 today. Tucker has around 400 mlb PA’s and VanMeter over 700 so I can wait to see if the other three can make a adjustment.
Some of these guys are going to struggle to hit .100, aka the Shelton Line.
How? Practice. It’s become the norm for them to have guys hitting not just below .200 but well below it. The bottom four hitters tonight have combined averages that are 32 points below what used to be an unacceptable level of performance for a major league player. There is no way any team can expect to win with so many holes in the lineup.
We don’t spend any money for real players.
Lots of practice at it.
I’ll never understand how out of touch Shelton is with his defensive positions with two strikes. Quintana threw outside breaking pitches 4 of the 5 pitches after Edman has two strikes and he fouls them all off to the right side except the one fastball he threw and Edman fouls it straight down at his feet. The fifth pitch an outside breaking pitch and he has Castillo almost at second and Edman hits right through the hole on the right side. They did the same thing on Goldie’s two run double down the rightfield line the inning before when he had Chavis 20 feet from the first base bag.
A bearded Gamel drives in that run.
My prediction of Hayes having 10 errors and an OPS of .600 by mid season is unfortunately on track……
Let’s face it, Pirate fans aren’t allowed to have nice things😖
Nice things cost money
Well Hayes is paid for and it ain’t helping, lol.
He’s young, he’s cheap and he’s not enough.
Not even close to being enough pieces to have a successful franchise.
And an owner who doesn’t give a fk
The strategy is to get Quintana as many wins as possible before the trading deadline. A winning record with a losing team, no matter the ERA, will bring in return at least a couple mediocre A+ arms. Why try to build a team? Winning teams cost money. Nickles doesn’t care about winning. His favorite song is, “First I Look At The Purse.”
This must be Shelton’s “we’re actually going to try and win this one” lineup.
I always think that until he starts yanking pitchers early when they are doing well then leaving them in too long when they aren’t doing well and unless he lucks into the team having a lead going into Renegade time he’s probably going to let it get away. and we know Bednar can’t save them all and especially multiple inning saves.
