Pirates Game Discussion: Pirates 5, Dodgers 3

The Pittsburgh Pirates (12-17) take on the Los Angeles Dodgers (20-8) in the finale of a three-game series at PNC Park on Wednesday afternoon at 12:35 PM. Dillon Peters (3-1, 2.16) will be on the mound for the Pirates, going up against 24-year-old right-hander Ryan Pepiot, making his MLB debut. He had a 2.05 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 26.1 innings in Triple-A this season. He’s considered to be a top 100 prospect.

The Wednesday injury updates from the Pirates noted that Blake Cederlind had a setback in his recovery due to forearm pain and he’s not throwing for 4-5 days. Quinn Priester hasn’t had a setback from his oblique injury recovery, but there’s some delivery tweaks going on to help him avoid future injuries, which has delayed his return. Jake Marisnick will have UCL surgery. No timetable for his return yet.

Cam Alldred is on his way to the Pirates. Beau Sulser optioned, Perez to 60.

Here are the lineups:

Forgive my crassness, but FUCK YEAH!!!

Wilbur Miller

The great part of this is Jack. I figured he’d be sent down when they got some guys healthy. Now maybe he’ll just play his way into a regular job. Imagine—a right fielder playing right field! What’ll they think of next!

jedeweese

2 outta 3 ain’t bad. Meatloaf for supper.

chappy

Fun win and surprising series win!

On a different note: I was looking at Jack Suwinski’s Fangraph’s page and they have him rated a 20 for Fielding! 20??? Why would they have him that low? Have we seen anything to justify such a low rating?

HeisenbergWW

He looked pretty solid in RF. The Pirates think enough of his defense to have played him in CF for a few innings. Yoshi is a 20 in RF.

To many beers??
TNBucs

Someone pointed out the other day that the Reds beat the Brewers the day after they won the series against us. They ended up taking 2 of 3 and most amazingly scored 28 runs against the Brewers’ excellent pitching staff.

roibert.kasperski

Maybe we are witnessing signs of the Apocalypse ???

bucsws2014

Lose series to Reds, take series from Dodgers. Makes perfect sense.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Only to go right into another series with Cincy lol

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

(Who also just took 2 of 3 from Milwaukee, after getting absolutely stomped by Milwaukee)

roibert.kasperski

docdon385

Who are these guys and where were they yesterday? It’s nice to sometimes be reminded why I keep watching Pirate games. This is fun. I want more of it.

richard.deal

The difference between a good and bad team is to be able to do consistently well. It will be really interesting the next few months as the Pirates bring up prospects from AAA and AA to see who can make the cut at the MLB level. I was really hoping for more of that last year, but better late than never!

roibert.kasperski

Whoo HOOOO!!!! Pirates lose 2 of 3 to the Reds then take 2 of 3 from LA. Who woulda thunk it???

docdon385

Right. Now let’s see how they do against that Cincinnati juggernaut starting again tomorrow. There is no reason whatsoever they shouldn’t win at least three of the four games, but which Pirate team will show up?

roibert.kasperski

The 1960 Pirates…. They will be emerging from the Allegheny since there is no cornfield anywhere near PNC Park 🙂

PiratePrimate

I wish this team had a Smokey Burgess

PiratePrimate

And how come Smokey isn’t in the HOF. Check out his lifetime stats and explain to me why this nine-time All Star isn’t good enough?

TNBucs

It’s little more than randomness but this series has to be big for their belief, and belief matters.

jon6er

At the end of the day this type of success is not sustainable with this roster. But these two wins were very gratifying and anytime the Pirates beat one of the big media money teams from LA or NY I’m thrilled.

roibert.kasperski

Yes it does!

jon6er

Brandon Gomes is probably talking to Cherington right now about a deal at the AS break, lol.

roibert.kasperski

How did Rios never swing?? He could be a Pirate! Well, except for the fact he is hitting .303 still and .930 OPS

jon6er

He was sitting on fastball like he got Monday but he never got one, lol.

agent00

raise it!

docdon385

Van Meter giveth, Van Meter taketh away, Van Meter giveth again. End of story? Let’s hope.

roibert.kasperski

How the hell did that happen??

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Also, what if I want my headphones to say “Double-A” and not “Triple-A”? Makes me feel I got the demotion promotion like they did with Bins!!! lol

agent00

look at vanmeter doing stuff (mostly positive). cherington must feel such vindication! lol

roibert.kasperski

LOL! For a second there I bet BC was screaming NOOOOOO!!!!! followed by How the hell did that happen??

TNBucs

The contact play!

roibert.kasperski

At least VanMeter didn’t get doubled off!!!

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

(Me celebrating gifs being added. Not Vanmeter. Vanmeter sucks. Also just noticing the noti’s bell on top right. Clutch)

roibert.kasperski

Yeah, you were celebrating VanMeter, !

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

roibert.kasperski

LOL!!!

This also would be you to me 🙂

roibert.kasperski

Maybe VanMeter can totally redeem himself twice in one game??

roibert.kasperski

Not totally…… he had help. evened up for his misplay to get himself to 3rd….

TNBucs

But he then handled the contact play well, and gave a good postgame interview 🙂 I’m happy for him–getting the triple and scoring the run had to feel really good after the error.

TNBucs

You look at our OPS’s right now and the lineup actually looks respectable. One thing that jumps out, though, is Suwinski with an OPS of .733 vs. Reynolds with an OPS of .722.

jeffw3000

But, if you look at only May, it is Suwinski with a 1.105 vs. Reynolds with a .971. Not to mention Gamel’s 1.119 in May.

agent00

it sure would be nice if suwinski ended up being a good player for the pirates. he’s looked decent so far. hasn’t looked overmatched

TNBucs

He’s looked better than his stats but now the stats are catching up.

jeffw3000

He has really looked comfortable in the MLB. What impresses me the most is his SO%. He has a SO% of .174. If he had enough PAs to qualify that would put him tied with Justin Turner for 21 in the NL this year. That is impressive for a kid that was in AA to start the year. Of someone who has that many PAs for the Pirates, only Kevin Newman has a better SO%.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I wouldn’t get too fascinated with his SO% though, being that he’s generally had a SO% around 25% or higher throughout his career in the minors.

agent00

yes that impressed me as well, especially since most of the pirates minor leaguers are striking out so much.

TNBucs

I wonder if that factored into his call-up, along with already being on the 40-man of course.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I’d be happy cause then we can just focus on Suwinski from the Frazier trade, and forget Marcano exists

agent00

yeah. and the other dude too. cherington should probably just leave the scouting to his team.

Danatural08

Vogeysmack wack tallywack!

roibert.kasperski

Wham!!! Another Homer!!!!

roibert.kasperski

How did Muncy just watch that go by?? Oh yeah, he is hitting .138….. Pirates material right now…

jon6er

Sign him……..get it done😁

roibert.kasperski

Hayes had that Oh Sh*t body language as he thought the liner that Castillo caught was going as at least a single…

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

When a call is so bad I had to turn game back on to rewind and see if it really was as bad as it appeared. And, yup, it was that bad. Umps got me questioning what even is a strike anymore. Do they exist? Well, for our pitchers that is. Clearly called strikes exist against our batters. Even a full 2 ft off the plate.

Crap, tried to post by attaching but it did not take

Happy Crowe Day Y’ll!! well sorta ….

roibert.kasperski

Then……..it magically appeared!!! Thanks Tim 🙂

roibert.kasperski

Sorta Happy Crowe Day Y’all!!

1979andCounting

Infield should be half-way, have a feeling a 4th run would be too much with the Dodgers pen.
Gotta keep it 3 – 3 here.

docdon385

Okay, Van Meter should have fielded that ball and maybe gotten a DP, but this mess is on Stratton and the sleepwalking manager. Relief pitchers cannot walk people and cannot be allowed to keep pitching if they do.

TNBucs

Yeah, especially the leadoff batter with a 3-run lead. That set a bad tone.

agent00

chris stratton….may not be very good. 3-3 now

Last edited 1 month ago by agent00
TNBucs

Cherington needs to find more back-of-the-pen options. Stratton is okay but we should have a stronger complement to Bednar. Our good teams always had an “8th inning guy” and sometimes a “7th inning guy” who was/were as reliable as our closer. This year there is a big gap between Bednar and everyone else.

Danatural08

i see the comment sections is different now, i liked the old system’s ability to post a gif pretty easy, does this not have the same functionality?

Tim Williams

agent00

huzzah! a life without gifs is not a life at all

Tim Williams

It will by the end of the day.

Danatural08

Kang bang!

roibert.kasperski

Wham!!! Another Homer!!!!

TNBucs

That just balanced all of my frustration with VanMeter.

agent00

what about now?

TNBucs

It took him less than a half inning to get back in the negatives.

jon6er

It has been rebalanced, lol

roibert.kasperski

VanMeter is dogmeat again. Did not take a hitless streak. As Coach Red Beaulieu would say, Cut his ass!!

roibert.kasperski

Just when we want him gone…..He totally redeems himself!!!!

Well until he goes hitless for the next 15 AB

agent00

see vanmeter is good

jon6er

Yeah Joe Block was telling us that right after he hit it🤪

agent00

vanmeter is bad again

jon6er

You go Jack Suwinski!

agent00

saw this reynolds trade proposal in the athletic today. thoughts?

5. Marlins acquire CF Bryan Reynolds from Pirates for OF Jesús Sánchez, RHP Eury Pérez and SS Jose Salas

roibert.kasperski

Would not mind Perez and Salas as part but not Jesus. Need much more.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

In my book, any trade discussion (with the Marlins) that doesn’t involve 2 of Perez, Cabrera, Watson, or Meyer as a starting point isn’t worth talking any further.

roibert.kasperski

I agree. Right now, gotta keep asking for the moon, stars, and for laughs the sun too! no urgency to move him and at some point, someone will get desperate and offer pretty much all of that. 🙂

jeffw3000

I agree as well. There is no urgency to trade Reynolds right now, so they should only deal him if the return is hard to ignore. I might take Watson and some lower level prospects, but otherwise the return should include at least 2 of those 4. Reynolds is not a free agent until 2026, so they should only deal him if the return is huge. Perez would be nice, but I am not sold on Salas, and Sanchez is not exactly tearing it up in Miami.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

They already have a stacked rotation of young controllable starters in majors, with practically an entire rotation in upper minors. Sixto is probably only one I’d stay away from, with his constant injuries. If there’s a team to get desperate, I think it’d be them, also with their off-season kerfuffle with Jeter.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Hard pass

ArkyWags

That’s a Jim Bowden special, so it’s definitely bad.

Wilbur Miller

OK Mad Max.

TNBucs

So they’ve resorted to misinformation, just now showing a graphic with Gonzales batting .340 on the season.

roibert.kasperski

I saw the same graphic and was like How the hell did that happen? That is Peguero’s current average. Appears someone created the graphic with great haste and did not proof read before using it. Kinda like me 😂

jedeweese

Think I read that on RumBunter 🙄

agent00

maybe somewhere in the multiverse that is true

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Curve game has me angry, so I figure I’ll continue that anger by watching the Pirates.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Meh. I give up. Watching bad baseball is enough of a struggle, let alone coupling that with how egregiously awful the umps have been.

jedeweese

Please, can’t they just cut bait on Yoshi, VanMeter and Tucker?

roibert.kasperski

Bummer on Marisnick. Allen hopefully will be back June 7th.

Wilbur Miller

Maybe see both Kranick and Alldred in this game. Far rather they get run out there than De Jong and Hembree.

skliesen

Stupid challenge of the year goes to Dave Roberts.

roibert.kasperski

Forgot the game was on already, what was Roberts challenging ??

jon6er

I missed it also although the Dodgers losing the challenge in the first against the Pirates seems less important than the reverse.

skliesen

Let’s Go Bucs! Win the series vs Evil Empire – West!

1979andCounting

Really interesting how MLB’s largest payroll team can still get a young prospect onto their roster as a starting pitcher in mid-May. Is BC paying any attention?

jeffw3000

You just said it. When you have a $280 million dollar payroll you can bring them up anytime. If they perform well, you pay them 15-20 million to stay. If not you let them go, or trade them, and sign another pitcher for 15-20 million. You do not have to worry about years of control, because if a prospect does not work out you just sign a free agent to replace them, or you trade them for an established player with a contract a team is trying to unload.

1979andCounting

It’s a different world……no service time manipulation, promotion based on merit, demotion based on performance, playing every game to win, strong bench no drop off from starters……such a foreign concept.

Last edited 1 month ago by 1979andCounting
ArkyWags

Yep. It’s like those teams actually want to win. The absolute nerve on them to try!
